The part about Benson secretly dating a reporter was unnecessary; didn't add anything of value to the episode. And according to the wiki, he doesn't even appear again, so what the hell was the point?
Also, I know it was a different time and all that, but I don't buy that Benson would be the one to accidentally out someone. It's not in her character. The only reason they did it was so they could reveal and then cast doubt upon her relationship with the reporter. Which, as I already said, was pointless and unnecessary. If it was going to be one of the two of them, it makes more sense for it to be Stabler that accidentally did it.
