[8.1/10] If there’s one thing I think of when I think of IASIP, it’s the notion of insane, demented things happening, and their being met with an approach that has the thin patina of logic to it, but which only masks that much more absurdity underneath the surface, and only escalates as the one meets the other.
The Season 8 finale is that idea to a tee, with the silliness of Frank trying to get directions from Charlie via a tape, with Dennis driving while eating a bowl of cereal and the pair crashing into one another. Naturally, this leads to a mock trial over the issue, where The Gang pervert any notions of justice or courtroom procedures (employing a homemade verdict board adorably made by Mac himself.) Somehow, this escalates into a debate on evolution and, last but not least, into a physical challenge and recreation to “forensically” test what happened. When, semi-miraculously, and semi-inevitably, it leads to the same crashing result, Dee gets blamed for it. End season.
This isn’t the best episode of IASIP (though it’s quite good), but it may be the “most” episode of the show -- the one that feels like it hits all of the series’s usual beats, replete with deranged escalation of everything, stupid arguments over minutiae that explode into insane arguments over insaner topics, and Dee being left holding the bag. It’s an episode founded both on the dynamic within The Gang, and the way they turn weird events weirder when they all come together.
Overall, lots of good laughs in this one, and a fine way to close out the season.
Brilliant madness. This season has been a real highlight.
I mentioned in the previous episode, and several times in the past, that Dee often doesn't work for me - a combination of the writing and Kaitlin Olson's delivery. But here she was fantastic. This is Dee at her best.
