I rarely ever write comments/reviews, but this show was just... God, I cannot even put it into words. It had been such a long time since I last sat down and watched a whole show in one sitting, avoiding to pause even to get food, watched without multitasking... But this show, well, it truly captivated my attention, it held it for the whole time. I do not want to give anything away, however, the writing is impeccable. It is funny at times, but insanely heart-wrenching at others. So much of it felt incredibly realistic, and not only did I truly care for the characters, but I also could see parts of me reflected in them. I truly TRULY hope it gets renewed for a second season because I desperately want to know what will happen next. I want to see more of the characters' journeys.
Thoroughly enjoyed this series. First time seeing Mae Martin, love her in this!
Story is very interesting and covers many issues a couple might come across in terms of clashing/quite differing personalities.
A genuine revelation - Mae Martin is an absolute star. Entirely personal, brilliant comedy that is far too easy to get through in one sitting. Savour this, you'll miss it once it's done.
Wow. I really don’t know what to say. Well let’s start with the fact that this was the worst series I have watched this year.
Apparently it’s a comedy as the main character is a stand-up comedian and CONSTANTLY joking. Most of the times it was okay. But it started to get annoying when even the more serious scenes had a lot of joking around. Overall I didn’t like at all how the serious topics were handled. Maybe I’m just too serious but I want to see at least a bit of hard emotions when the subject matter requires them.
The acting felt forced and the cutting of the scenes didn’t give much help as it was very quick and pointy if you know what I mean. Everything was happening way too fast. The reveals and hints were obvious and dropped on your face as heavily as an elephant. The interactions between the characters lacked chemistry and felt awkward most of the time.
I felt very frustrated with the characters and their decisions and actions. Some of them were so absurd that I found myself thinking that people in real life wouldn’t act that way.
One thing I found good was the representation this series gives to minorities. I learned more about what everyday life feels like when you’re transgender. And I have to say it started to get better towards the end of the season. It still wasn’t good though...
Could someone from trakt fix that obvious, wrong thumbnail of Charlotte Ritchie? The image is of the middle-aged singer, not the actress.
I couldn't finish this one and stopped at episode four because the relationship just made me really uncomfortable. I couldn't feel anything for our leads as a couple, and ended up hating George for how her coming out is treated. I'm just super tired of LGBTQ+ media constantly behaving as if the person who is being hurt by being kept in the closet is being unreasonable and should have more sympathy for the person not out/stay with them. George led Mae to believe she was out, that her friends were aware of her, and, meanwhile, literally lead her friends to believe she was dating a guy. When called out, she blames her friends and never takes any actual responsibility for all the harm she caused to Mae. Then there's the whole "promise you'll never leave me" conversation. George just came off as really needy and toxic, while meanwhile, Mae doesn't seem ready for a relationship at all and, while this can cause get drama, the framing just felt really off to me without enough recognition. Mae is constantly blamed for everything and it felt like none of the characters had real sympathy for her. Not bad necessarily, just too depressing for me, and I prefer to see LGBTQ+ media that has a more complex take on coming out for both sides.
I hadn’t heard of this series but I saw it listed in Cosmopolitan’s 50 TV COUPLES WHO WILL RESTORE YOUR FAITH IN LOVE, PROMISE, so I gave it a go and ended up binging both seasons. I knew Charlotte Ritchie to be a wonderfully soulful comedic actress from GHOSTS but had never heard of Mae Martin, who turns out to be a wonderful writer, actress and comedian with great depth and heart (and a fellow Canadian, to boot). This series has heart in abundance (and sex as well) but the emotional journey of the couple kept me riveted. Truly a great series. I’m sorry they capped it at two seasons and hope to find more good TV written by Martin. I give this series a 9 (superb) out of 10. [Comedy with heart]
Thank goodness they stopped the handheld camera in Season 2. That ish was making me sea sick.
[Netflix] The only two seasons of this series accomplish something as difficult as dealing with issues such as gender identity, drug addictions, trauma and sexual abuse with a brave and not politically correct gray area. S2 is more complex, it also has crazier comedy moments, which almost seem taken from the humor of the Marx Brothers. It is a terrifying and painful series, but damn funny.
I think i enjoyed the first season a little bit more, but I loved seeing all the growth of Mae and George that happened in season 2.

I found it amazing. Quite likely because I personally really like Mae's character and their sweet relationship. The ideas expressed through this felt genuine and everything about the turn of events felt something I could empathize and understand. In that regard, the events are quite practically possible in the real world and we get to see how they deal with some conflicts. Would love to watch more shows like this.
