Fargo: Season 4

4x06 Camp Elegance

I gave it some time, but it's nothing more than your standard gangster story. Gaetano is a lazy stereotype over-acted to comical proportions, the rivalry for control another lazy cliche, and Chris Rock is just not compelling in the least. Oraetta and Ethelrida are interesting but not interesting enough to put up with the massive meh of the rest of it. I'm out.

They fool me into thinking for a second that we’ll be blissfully rid of Gaetano’s antics for good, damn. But sidelining him and ramping up the stakes/events (and putting spotlight on a stealth MVP in Ben Wishaw), especially in the last 5-10 minutes, make for for a more engrossing episode than the last few.

"Camp Elegance" is yet another weak episode. Nothing particularly awful stands out, but it's just so unremarkable and forgettable, aside from Chris Rock's jarring performance and some plot contrivances. Oraetta is still enjoyable to watch, though.

Overall, pretty poor.

I don’t understand the criticism of Chris Rock in this role - it seems to me like a stand out performance for him. But then, I usually avoid anything he is in.

Race based gang power struggles are pretty cliched, but this tale also has the kinky nightingale serial killer from Minnesota, a couple of lesbian outlaws, a touch of the occult, and the teen girl playing the straight role in the mix.

Can’t wait to see how all these pieces come together in the second half of the season.
