Well, well, well. Why, is this an Amish production of The Count of Monte Cristo or just the weirdest circle jerk I've been invited to?
Started great, not so much by the end... too many disconnected and unexplained things, while not being interesting enough at the same time
Hey, that's the guy from Hannah Montana!
They absolutely nailed bringing the Brotherhood of Steel to the small screen, they’re just as boring as in the games! At least Maximus and Dane seem like interesting characters, and of course Lucy is instantly lovable.
I only ever have played Fallout 4 so I certainly don’t know all the details about Fallout lore, but to me they are capturing the Fallout feel really well.
Overall, they are setting up an intriguing story with interesting characters that will certainly cross paths at some point. The directing style and storytelling really remind me of Westworld S1, especially the fight sequence in the vault. Good to great start to the show, hope they can keep it going.
For someone who has never played or know anything about Fallout lore, after 1 episode I think I'm still in the same boat..
Will update in episode 2.
What a MASTERPIECE!!!!!!! Walton Goggins is legend!
A strong start, setting the scene for what’s to come. Faithfull to the games.
A fact that won’t save your life one day, you wouldn’t be able to survive a nuclear shockwave standing like they do.
Hm. Not great, not bad. We'll see how this goes.
Never played the games, seemed boring to me (couldn't we get a show about Bioshock? The first one of course?!)
Anyway, it's ok so far, don't know if I'm sticking to it. We'll see.
Review from some random internet user who has never played the game (thus not giving a random 10/10 out of nostalgia/fandom love, or 0/10 cause it wasn't hardcore enough... no inbetween. As it seems to be the case for many, whenever there's a famous adaptation)
Quite good, nice worldbuilding, not much depth for any of the characters but it's still the pilot so we'll se on that. Decent fighting and above average CGI.
Not much emotional impact for a post-apocalyptic intro, where you're supposed to get drawn to what the characters felt (like, no comparison to The Last of Us pilot).
Only a picture of dogmeat in the first episode? Come on, how dare you not introduce the best character in the first episode!?!?
Haha solid start, onto the next episode
100% fallout. loved it.
you had me at junk launcher.
MODERATION EDIT: Be respectful.
They nailed the vibe of the game
I am big fan of fallout from 1996 fallout 1
I am big fan of fallout game series go back first fallout 1 watch this show it’s unforgettable
While they definitely had to cram quite a bit into this first episode, I preferred the approach of introducing all three of the main characters in one episode rather than dragging things out. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
I relate to the brother character the most as i would be too short too scrawny and too chicken to be of any use in an emergency situation, better off just putting me in a steel box until it all blows over
"Hey, Mr. Nolan, let's give the fans what they want?"
"And that is?"
"A super fun 'getting out of the vault' episode that lasts an hour?!"
"You're a genius! Do it".
Sigh.
Went into this almost completely blind, except for a few headlines, as I didn't want to spoil myself to the adaption of one of my earliest and dearest gaming experiences (F76 excluded). I'm glad they didn't even try to make this family friendly.
Starting with a birthday party felt quite nostalgic.
They definitely nailed the morbid brutality of the games as well as the dark, twisted humour in this opener. The details to everything is great, it doesn't seem like quickly put together by people who don't care about the game (looking at you, everyone involved in Halo >:( ). But they are clearly cheaping out on the CGI, some more practical effects would have been nice. Except the Vertibirds, they looked fine.
It's not quite on the level of Last of Us and falls a bit short compared to that. Especially in the cinematography department, LoU is incredibly well shot. This has a looot of close ups or darkness and is cut a lot quicker. But much of the first episode was in a Vault (anything else would be disappointing), so let's see how they handle the world in later episodes. The preview at the end looks promising at least. However, to be fair, the killing by the raiders was well shot - in parts.
Overall, if this first episode is any indication, then this is as faithful as you could have hoped. It's not retelling a specific game's main story (which have always been somewhat weak in opposite to the storytelling in the world) but telling its own, inspired by the game's universe. That's great.
Sidenote: I like the poster for Season One a lot. The resemblance to a skull is a great touch.
Now that’s a way to use the curtains.
idk setting felt very fan made. Not in a good way. Dear lord that slow-mo fight... almost killed any desire to watch further. Maybe if it was done as clear V.A.T.S. node and wink it could have worked for me. At least keep it around main character pov so you get a nice mix of both.
Characters:
- Naive vault dweller - she nailed the combo of satire, absurd comedy and brutal violence in her acting. Works.
- Fan of Brotherhood of Steel - I care as much about him, as I did about all of those fanatics in the games. "This is unfair" scene felt like utter bs. Injured person was more interesting than him.
- The Ghoul supposedly to be the cool character. His scene dragged on, felt like a parody. Make up/effects on him look good. That's about it.
And most importantly it felt very boring. Not necessary the show problem. I feel like being familiar with the world worked against the narrative.
I heard so much praise... maybe it will get better in a couple of episodes, hopefully?
I fell asleep twice both during Brotherhood of steel on screen............
Ten years of "cousin stuff"
LMAO
it seems if you like the game you like the show. if you don't play the game, the show isn't that good.
typical end of the world, they always have better technology than we do while everything is shattered to pieces and people are petrified
of course you get woke (alphabet soup community) you get some bad acting for good measure.
They dug my guy from the TV show "Justified" out of the ground, I'll stick around at least for another episode..
I've only played Fallout briefly and watched my brother playing it somewhat more. I have played Fallout shelter a bit more so I have been more exposed to some of the themes in that.
Episode 1 of any series tends to be a bit dull as they try to introduce all the characters and set up the story for what is to come. It can be hard to do all of that while making the episode entertaining enough to keep people watching. Fallout seems to take a slightly different approach, while it introduces the characters and setting it doesn't give much to suggest how their stories will intertwine later. For fans of the game this is probably enough because they already have a good idea of how things will play out (generally speaking) but for people who haven't played it, it might feel a bit disjointed and hard to get into.
the character of Lucy is quite endearing and she carries her storyline quite well. It's absurd, fun and perhaps the most important story to set up the theme of the show overall. Walter Goggins character is also entertaining and he of course brings a lot to the role but the story of Maximus is quite unsatisfying. By the time Dane gets injured I think they expect viewers to relate to Maximus much more and although he denied hurting her, it seems like maybe it was him which really doesn't make him very likeable. I'm not sure how the character of Dane fits with the game as I'm guessing that all the females in the game are more feminine but Dane is a more believable soldier than many females in tv and movies. It looked like they put a moustache on her at one point and unless that was introduced in later games it seems like an unnecessary inclusion. She doesn't need to have facial hair to prove that she is a masculine woman. Hopefully they can just let her be without trying to shoehorn in some kind of political message. I can already see a couple of confused comments by people upset about wokeness. If such inclusions become too obvious then they lose their power of representation anyway. The tv show Dispatchers from Elsewhere is a good example of how to include such characters in a more natural way without ramming it down the viewers throat... hopefully Fallout won't overstate it either.
I don't really know how I feel about the show, too much of Maximus' storyline and I might get bored but the rest was pretty good.
I thought the Lucy story was a 10/10, but the Maximus story really dragged, I couldn't at any point tell what the main character was feeling, so it got kinda boring. I personally hate the "very powerful, smug, making smartass quips" character, so the last story did nothing for me
So, it's basically Star Wars: The Force Awakens with a Fallout skin.
Lucy is Rey, Maximus is Finn, and the Ghoul is Han Solo.
It was far above my expectations. The series has a truly incredible structure. The girl is already my favorite. The productions that I watched with great pleasure also did great work. As always, my classic sentence is, what is coming is coming.:grin:
The tone of this show is all over the place. Is it a comedy? A serious drama? The first episode was very uneven - hopefully as the protagonists get together it finds a rhythm.
I have always appreciated Walton Goggins as an actor, since the days of Justified. And even from this first episode, The Ghoul seems like a character that would be right for him. And everyone wants to save the world anyway, but they just disagree on how.
Solid first episode, looking forward to the rest
oh, pickle juice and gashes, what a wonderful feeling.
I've only played Fallout Shelter so I'm coming to this show with the innocence and ignorance of a dweller lmao this is crazy
I haven't played any games in the series apart from mobile game Fallout Shelter, but the show had very good reviews, so I decided to give it a try. I'm not sold on it yet, though it may be because this is just the first episode that introduces all the main characters. I've watched it just after finishing The Last of Us, and after the first episode it seems to me that even though both shows are pretty brutal, Fallout concentrates more on action than human emotions and relationships like TLoU did.
Not great but not bad either. Remains to be seen if the writer hacks turns it into crap after a few episodes as they oftentimes do.
Honestly I wasn't expecting much for the fallout series as I have had bad experiences in shows that adapted a video game to a series or movies like Halo show for example or Tomb Raider, Gran Turismo, Uncharted and etc. So my expatriates for the show was very low but it turned out to be pretty great. I like how the started the show it felt like any beginning fallout Bethesda game, from the vault into the world and see how destroyed everything around you. I don't want to spoil anything but if you liked The Last Of Us show you experience something similar, and for anyone who haven't played or knows anything about Fallout universe they will explain how everything becomes ruined. Hope you enjoy the show and can't wait to see other people opinions about the first season of fallout.
katy perry average day...I guess
So, it's a post apocalyptic world in ruins where nobody gets a crap about people's lives, and it's based on 1950s when words like "faggot" were totally okay and black people didn't have rights yet - and yet they still shoved a transgender in the Brotherhood of Steel, who they respectfully call "they/them". Because apparently it's perfectly normal even in that kind of world.
Right, such a subtle woke propaganda bullshit.
Bored, I fell asleep
A good start to the season. With some very good action and some great CGI. Very intriguing and interesting characters. Looking forward to the next episode. :thumbsup_tone1:
A good action packed start to the season. Some very interesting characters and some great CGI work. Looking forward to the next episode. :thumbsup_tone1:
Great first episode so far
Opening seen was great. Boring and annoying characters. Absolute waste of time.
The pacing is a little off - particularly towards the end of the episode - but it's still a good start to a series!
Yes, yes, the opening scene was great (dramatically, though it doesn't actually make sense). An easy trope to leverage at the open, but it was surprisingly well-executed. And I now get what people are going on about with regard to Goggins.
Tentative 6-7/10 4-5/10 but I'm not watching it again to see just how bad all the lines bore out. Rating a 1 to counteract all the shills and lemmings. This has had artificial astroturfing for weeks before the show was dropped all at once. But they're gonna have to explain some things satisfactorily. Some of the plot writing was kinda murky. Still, I was entertained, despite my expectations, there was no raging, and a few criticisms are mostly nitpicks.
Edit after seeing episode 2: Nope. It's a solid 5 at best. They broke their own (Bethesda's) lore in the first scene, the physics and action don't make sense (again, Nolan's shoddy action directing) and the dialogue I let slide the first time by giving it a pass as I was just trying to watch it and keep track of the plot, is just awful when actually paying attention to it.
Nitpicks
More like Budget-out, am I right, wastelander?
It hurts that they spent almost a billion dollars defiling Tolkien, and yet this suffers from a clearly anemic budget. The vault suits are okay. The vault was fine, other than some obvious rushed CGI in lieu of an actual full set, but the rest of the costume design and location setting is just... ugh. Also, there's like no visual style other than extremely harsh high contrast HDR processing of clearly digital photography with a heap of fake film grain PP filtering to make it look "cinematic", without actually having any cinematic stylings other than crushed black levels. It looks like a bad, oversaturated Fallout 4 ReShade, instead of taking the opportunity to actually do interesting bloomy, dynamic color work with the HDR.
Fallout 3 and New Vegas had a distinct look and fantastic art direction. The locations were evocative and captivating. There was a cheap callback to FO4 with the airship, but the introduction to the BOS was... a crappy barracks in a cloudy wasteland, with the most technologically advanced post-nuclear faction in the Wasteland having their middle-aged aspirants wearing old, featureless Hanes T-shirts and fake BDU pants, and the Squires wearing last minute fake Nazi flight suits. Did these MFs making this series even look at any of the Brotherhood gear and costumes from any of the games? It just looks like they heard "cleric", and were given the game assets to the power armor from Fallout 4. Again, I'm guessing they just didn't have the budget or time to actually hire enough talent. Either way, I find the show disappointingly ugly and lacking style... much like Fallout 4 without heavy modding.
Game RantMy Fallout 4, though? A work of post-apocalyptic art. The world-building and level design is still great, it's just hidden under retrofitted Gambryo Engine jank and bad optimization that didn't leave room for any shader work after taking out the color filtering of FO3.
Speaking of (looks at cast list) Maximus, are we supposed to root for him, or think he's the most pathetic man alive? He was supposed to have been conscripted at like, seven? And yet we have someone who's clearly over thirty competing with ROTC kids as an aspirant. Also, I thought he was guilty from the liar's responses he gave to his interrogation...erm... promotion/initiation? The weird contradictory double-speak from spinach chin made me think that they had set him up to get him to volunteer for a suicide mission as an outcast, but nope. Apparently just a promotion! Cool guy. Really makes me care about him and his fanservice faction.
Also, what was the point of the explosion after the (extremely obvious) raider, um, raid? Raiders in Bethesda Fallout have no depth and don't make any sense considering they outnumber the people they're raiding, but it wasn't clear what the point of that was. And yeah, I think I know what they're doing and what the personal history/setup is with raven-haired Raider Lady and Vault 33.
The cowboy stuff was really goofy, so I'm not sure what kind of tone the show will even settle on.
Guess we'll find out on the next episode of my torrent is done I totally subscribed to Bezos' world scam to watch this!
Now this is a good series, the scenery and actors everything fits
I can say without a doubt that this. is. Fallout. Smiled throughout the entire episode, I can't wait for more!
So I'm no American, can someone explain if fooling around with your cousin is meant as a joke or is it normal overthere?
Don't know the games, tried it because there was a badass dog on the poster and it might just be the biggest hit of the year for me.
I can't believe my eyes! If I had tear ducts I would cry at a moment like this!
I've played some of the games but not all. Enough to appreciate the setting but not get butt hurt about details. Solid start, I'm more enthused about Lucy's plot than the brotherhood though.
Also is the bounty on Harold Finch and Bear :joy:
I do wonder if we'll get any Person of Interest or Westworld nods at all.
I expected a bit more music wise with Ramin Djawadi involved again but it's only the first episode so we'll see. That swell of music as Walton Goggins rode off as the bombs hit was enough to make me feel a bit emotional tbh. It had the essense of Inon Zur's FO4 theme in it.
I've never played Fallout in my fvcking life, and I want to enjoy this series as it is.
And the characters so far are good, and the setting in general I like...
The fact that her cousin wants to fuck her is a great touch...
It looks like it has action and stuff, hopefully it's good....
It has good touches of the games from what I've seen....

Disappointed that the intro doesn't begin with "war, war never changes". (Update: nvm, just keep watching :)
