[7.8/10] My favorite episode of the show yet! The idea of Bean trying to find what she’s good at, and realizing the world outside of the castle isn’t so easy is, is a nice throughline for the episode. And the jokes came fast and furious in this one too.
The opening scene with Bean in the nunnery was good for some laughs (and amusing sign gags). Bean living with Bunty until “she realizes how good she has it” was a nice way to kick things off. The combination of her seeing how tough it is for everyone else, how much privilege she has, and how it’s not so easy to just pick up a job made both for good comedy and good character development. Plus, the B-plot with Elfo enjoying being treated like a baby was good for a few yuks as well.
I also enjoyed her apprenticeship as an executioner with Bunty’s husband. Again, it was rife with good humor like the torture of stale golfing jokes, or Bean’s indecisiveness about lunch. And I like her inability to bring herself to chop someone’s head off. That all dovetailed nicely with the whole Hansel and Gretel riff, which was a nice balance of ridiculous and creepy. Their whispering and Elfo’s obliviousness was a hoot, and the ensuing chase sequence was legitimately well-staged and framed.
The resulting sparing of the witch is a nice way to go out, and I like that Bean’s care for her friend was the motivation she needed to be capable and resourceful at something. It’s a good look for all involved.
Overall, the highlight of the season so far that comes with some good laughs, a nice mini-arc for the main character, and a cool horror-esque sequence at the end.
