I'm going to keep this short... I love DiP and love Josephine Jobert even more, but the BBC really dropped the ball with this episode :pensive: a very good season overall, and Danny John-Jules being back makes me very happy  but this finale was poor, very poor and could have been done soooo much better than this
Let's hope for some fresh talent next season, and don't let the writers of this episode anywhere near it again!
Sometimes, I absolutely despise Death in Paradise's writing, and this episode is a prime example of that. Why is everyone treating Neville like the bad/stupid guy? The one who fumbled the bag was 100% Florance! The one who wouldn't even commit to an emotion, who couldn't even say she wanted to date, was Florance. That was the worst "confession" I have ever heard, and I got angry. Why on earth should Neville be made to be content with NOTHING? Why is he expected to accept crumbs from a woman, being not even her second choice, but maybe a 17th, and be grateful for it? Why is he made into a string of bad adjectives when he tells her, quite justifiably, that he wants someone who actually, truly wants him? Honestly, the way they wrote this finale? Neville deserves better than Florance. There, I said it. I love my girl, but this wasn't it.
I love Neville. He's my second favorite D.I. (Richard will always be first), and I will miss him. This lovely character deserved more from the writers in his finale and throughout his entire tenure on the show. Constantly being belittled, being made the butt of the joke for things that aren't funny and shouldn't be made light of, and in my opinion--outright gaslit by many of the characters. Catherine, especially. As much as I used to love her, how the writers made her react to Selwyn and Neville's latest storylines has made me dislike her. Both of these men had completely valid reactions to the situations they were in. Why are you dismissing them and putting the blame on their shoulders?
I am curious to see who will become the next D.I., and I certainly hope Death in Paradise will treat them with more respect than they've given Neville.
(BTW, I see Alexander in these comments all the time, and it's hilarious to me how we often view things totally differently, haha)
Is he the worst possible lover and potential partner ever? Yes! This whole thing between them is painful to watch. I don't understand why she doesn't run away.... I'm kind of disappointed that this show obviously can't tell at least a half-decent romantic story. Do you really think that will work out? To be completely honest, the finale makes me kind of angry. Not only is he a dull guy but he also takes Florence away from us? Will there ever be a female or local DI? I realize that I was never attached to this DI. I liked most of his predecessors better.
The case is okay. The plan seems to be unnecessarily complicated and error-prone but it makes this episode much more entertaining after all.

Damn, the writers really made us work for that.
In a way, I didn't like this episode and in another I did. It was too obvious to go the traditional get-them-together straight away romance, and let's be honest, that is not in character with Neville. The writers also did well in reminding us with the flashbacks that Florence had given him reason to worry that she was going to hurt him. I was sitting there silently screaming at him for being a complete numpty as he did it, but I understood why he turned her down at first. And so many people play it safe, never taking a chance, so it was very realistic writing.
The only thing I'm disappointed about is that we normally get to meet the new lead and as far as I'm aware we've not had any possibilities? It's completely unknown at this point, and I was expecting one to be introduced in this episode at least.
