Stakes are high since the victim isn't exactly unknown to us. In fact we like the victim. Plot is a bit different this time: there's an obvious suspect right from the start. But of course we know from the start that the case isn't what it seems. Cause that would be too easy wouldn't it?
This is one of the few episodes of the show they have resisted flying in tons of white people from the UK (who subsequently murder or are being murdered). Stories with locals are so much more interesting. (It would even be better if they didn't forget that both the island and the show have a French heritage - having a few French speakers would be more exotic, credible and immersive. A single merci isn't enough). A promising start of the season.

Definitely NOT one of their better season premieres... There was potential here, but I don't feel it lived up to it. Any stakes added because Selwyn got shot were quickly undone when it was made extra clear there was no risk to his life.. My biggest problem is the murderer. Marlon Collins, a man we last saw on Saint Marie about 13 years ago, is back... and this time, he upgrades to the final bad! Hooray? Aside from the fact that I wonder what the writers have against reformed fellons--they're rarely truly reformed in this show--I can't believe they expect us to believe that setup. Even if I believed the dude was so drunk he could forget something like that, even though nothing about his behavior suggested anywhere near that, how on earth am I expected to believe Marlon, who acted on impulse, knew that the guy with the gun was so drunk he wouldn't remember Marlon lifting his hand and using it to shoot Selwyn??? Like, Marlon didn't shoot Selwyn from another place right as the other guy raised his gun or something. He literally lifted the man's arm, whispered, "Shot him," and then pressed the trigger. What did he THINK would happen? It makes absolutely no sense...
