[7.4/10] This was a solid kid adventure episode. Even when the jokes are more chuckles than guffaws, the writing on the series is so tight that you can’t help but admire it. The show made it pretty plain that Gene wanted to save the blob so badly because he identified with it. It’s a little odd and misshapen and misunderstood, but becomes magical in the right context, and he can relate. That’s a little cheesy, but it works in that context. But I like how his annoying noises -- the things that made him feel misunderstood in the episode -- end up being the thing that allows him to help the blob in the end. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s some nicely clockwork writing that buoys (no pun intended) the proceedings.
But I also just enjoyed the kid adventure part The Belchers teaming up with the Kingshead Island kids to challenge the Yacht Club owner was a nice setup with some amusing rich kid humor and “king of his own little realm” humor. Plus, the biggest laughs came from Tina’s obsession with the one kid’s ankles. It’s smaller scale laughs and smiles, but they were plentiful.
The B-story was quite enjoyable as well. I like the idea that Trev is lost without Jimmy Pesto, and doesn't hate Bob, but is addicted to high fives and Jimmy’s validation. There were much funnier bits in this segment. I got a huge kick out of everyone pretending to be Jimmy insulting Bob (Teddy’s “I look like a dog from the 1970s!” was a particular treat), and the gang’s efforts to help Trev brought the humor as well. I particularly enjoyed Bob’s line that he does feel bad for Trev, but feels bad for a lot of other people first.
Overall, this is a solidly built episode where the laughs are gentler but the story is nicely done which helps the whole thing work.
