[8.4/10] Ahhh, nobody does Thanksgiving like Bob’s Burgers does, and this installment of what’s become a tradition is no exception to its stellar track record with the holiday. The premise is simple, but spirals out nicely, with Teddy asking the Belchers for help for his family’s thanksgiving, which turns into a much bigger ordeal when they discover that he’s a hoarder.
I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’m a sucker for Teddy episode, and this one’s a doozy. His childlike incompetence at understanding even the most basic parts of hosting or food preparation, his clear discomfort at his hoarding habit being exposed, and his reaction to the rousing and razzing from the rest of the Belchers could make this one a winner on its own.
But it’s also a nice opportunity to get a slightly deeper look at Teddy. It’s a little too easy and pop-psychology esque to suggest that Teddy’s a hoarder because he’s a “fixer” after his attempts to fix his parents’ marriage, and that transformed into his attempts to fix random items, but the episode doesn’t linger on it, and it gives just enough weight to what’s ultimately a silly and fun comic premise.
Again, the Belchers interactions with Teddy are all great, particularly Linda’s well-meaning if a little overzealous attempts to help him. And the kids are in peak Greek Chorus mode, with their game of finding “the best thing” in Teddy’s junk piles, and Louise’s sarcastic remarks in particular leading to plenty of comedy.
But I also just love Bob in this one. His fascination with and investment in Thanksgiving is an endless source of humor and joy on this show, and his devotion to his new brine, flatcracking the turkey, and redeeming his own Thanksgiving by redoing Teddy’s are all just great guises to put the character in. He and Teddy are a crack comic pairing, and Bob literally crying when his second meal goes well is the perfect grace note.
Overall, another entry in the series’ seemingly endless supply of outstanding Turkey Day episodes.
