[7.7/10] The A-story of this one is solid. I enjoy Gene resisting participating in Courtney’s video because it goes against what he stands for artistically. Courtney and her dad are excited about their video, but it uses every generic trick in the book. It’s natural for Gene, with his weird and distinct sense of artistic expression, to hate that. But I like that he comes around because he recognizes that there’s nothing wrong with normie things making people happy. The message, about how doing things because your friends enjoy them and helping makes you a good friend, as something more important than any sort of artistic purity, is a good one.
The comedy’s solid too. Tina and Louise being obsessed with Candy is a fun beat, and provides plenty of comic business for them. At the same time, the episode’s good at spoofing everything from the “Hit Me Baby One More time” video to the infamous “Friday” viral hit.
But what puts this episode over the top is the B-story. Bob, Linda, and Teddy alternatively freaking out and calming one another over a random briefcase left by a mysterious/normal person at the restaurant is the exact sort of “weirdos spin out over something minor” comedy that I love. The dynamic of Bob trying to calm Linda and Teddy’s more out there impulses is always a great setup. And I love how it flips once they find walnuts inside, to where Bob is freaking out that the guy must be a serial killer while Linda and Teddy are nonplussed. It’s low key and peculiar to perfection, and an all-timer for just how out there the show takes a small thing like a lost briefcase. I just love it.
Overall, a good A-story with some solid laughs gets boosted by an outstanding B-story.
