This show makes me so happy. I love that it can still make me laugh after 11 seasons, and I'm always hard-pressed to find stuff that truly makes me laugh.
austin, we have a problem!
[7.7/10] I love the A-story on this one. There’s so much hilarious controlled chaos with Bob, Linda, and the kids trying to transform Bob’s Burgers into “Urge”, a fancy date night spot for Valentine’s Day romantics who couldn’t get reservations elsewhere. The injection of Hugo as one of those aspiring romantics (and potential fly in the ointment) alongside Teddy’s usual sparkling commentary, is a hoot.
The only snag is the B-story, which sees Tina attending Tammy’s anti-Valentine’s Day party that turns out to be an excuse for various teenagers to hook up. It’s an amusing enough concept, and the horror movie vibe they do with Tina’s discovery of the change is reasonably clever. It just never really clicks into place or finds another gear, either in terms of laughs or the story.
But the A-story more than makes up for it. There’s a nice central throughline of Bob and Linda impinging on their own Valentine’s Day in the hopes of making money and doing something bold and different with their restaurant. The way it circles back to the end, with the two of them sharing the things they love about one another that they were planning to recite otherwise, works really well. Bob loves that Linda would do something like this just to promote love, and Linda loves how Bob gets to have a fancy restaurant, if only for one night. It’s sweet the way they’re ready to return to being a burger restaurant at the end, because at the end of the day, they just love their normal lives with one another.
Meanwhile there’s some great comedy on the edges. It’s sitcom absurdity, but I got a big kick out of the Belchers trying to convince Hugo that his date is on the way so that he won’t get testy and shut them down. The extended lengths they go to in order to keep up the ruse got some yuks out of me, and I especially laughed at the comment that he texted his date a selfie of him pointing to his watch. The kids trying to cash in on Valentine’s Day upcharging by selling paper roses and songs leads to some fun interactions with the crowd. And as always, I especially love Teddy’s shtick here, being single and proud and talking about how he’s content to blow his money on a fancy meal rather than trifles like “rent or heart medicine.”
Overall, it’s another holiday-themed banger from Bob’s Burgers, with a good balance of sweetness, laughs, and looniness, with only a so-so B-story to dampen the proceedings.
