I can't very well explain how I feel about this show. When I started watching it, I loved the premise of the show: the planet is destroyed and all that's left of our race is 1 spaceship and 50.000 people. I didn't like the characters very much (I even disliked the way some actors played their role) and didn't think much of the special effects.
But in some way, this show has gripped me like very few shows have before. The combination of the premise, the unfolding story, the incredible dilemmas the survivors must face, the focus on politics/religion/science/social development rather than action and battles, even the musical score was perfect to drag me further into the show. I even started to care for the characters.
After watching all seasons I'm left a little unsatisfied with the ending (as I always am with any show), but the way this show could transport me into another world, might make this one of the very few shows I could watch a second time.
Kind of meh. Can be summed up as "Ahh, robots, suddenly: Space-Jesus"
This show is a complete mystery to me in the way I perceive it.
I know the original since being a kid. Always loved it and watched it many times. Read the books, too. When the mini-series came I hated it. Everything was different, especially the characters. So I never bothered with the rest that came later.
For whatever reason, years on, I decided to buy the DVD box. I watched the whole show and I was so drawn into it. The day hadn't enough hours in it to watch the episodes. One day I went through thirteen episodes in one sitting. Still a record. I thought it was amazing from start to finish and rated it accordingly "9".
Now, ten years later, I wanted to watch it again. Aside from knowing the main story line, which spoils a lot, I was really exited at the beginning. But that subsided pretty fast and by the middle of the first season I was getting bored. Is that the great show I watched before ? I don't like the story or the characters. And there are so many holes and logical problems in the plot.
By the end of season one I don't care any more and decide it's better to stop then ruin my memory of it being what it was.
I'm waaay overdue watching this, and finally did. In 2022, so many movies and TV shows spoon-feed the narrative to the viewers: look, this is the bad guy, he's doing evil stuff and looks evil. This is the good guy: he may have flaws, but he's just human, you know? Or here's a guy you originally thought was evil, but turns out that he was just hurt badly. Character development, because he's good, actually.
Watching BSG in 2022 is a breath of fresh air. The characters are complex, multi-dimensional. They make mistakes and more importantly: those mistakes have consequences. There is a lot of nuance in the relationships between the characters and the writers kept these relationships extremely consistent.
There is also real character development. Not only for the better: very often, quite the opposite. These changes are real: they affect the story and the characters relationships as well. And why wouldn't some people change for the worse? They are experiencing unprecedented hardships, injustice and tragedy.
Finally, something we don't see often: the story is a complete arc. I'm not claiming that the writers knew from the start where the story would end up, but they had a lot of foresight. So when the finale came, it felt complete, logical, like things were flowing in that direction from the beginning.
The greatest show. It has a little bit of everything: Sci-fi, horror, drama, romance, comedy, tragedy etc etc.
I have very fond memories of the first time I watched this show. My dilemma now is if enough time has passed for a second viewing. Fabulous!
I was depressed when this ended. Very few shows immerse you into another world like this one did.
What do you hear, Starbuck?
Honestly this is without question worst tv show I have seen so far.
The show was fantastic at first but then turned to 'meh' after a couple of seasons. Once I start watching a show, I will watch every episode in the series. I didn't even bother to finish the last season or so.
A series that redefines what a stellar remake should be, albeit sprinkled with very heavy religious undertones that continue into the sister series Caprica. Even still this will remain a stand out masterpiece of SciFi.
Battlestar Galactica, the reboot, is probably the greatest science fiction TV show of all time. (That obviously depends on what we mean by “science fiction”, as if I included the original Prisoner in that genre, maybe I would be forced to rethink my position. And no, no version of Star Trek has ever particularly impressed me to the extent this show does.)
It has the highest production values of any science fiction show to date, it has the most complex mythology outside of Star Trek, and its characters are not one-dimensional – in fact most of them are quite complex. At its very best, it was also one of the ballsiest shows on television – despite the restrictions placed on it by its network – and it tackled issues that no other fictional, dramatic television program would touch with a ten foot pole: who else took on 9/11 and the war in Iraq like Battlestar Galactica?
But that being said, there are a lot of things wrong with it:
Characters regularly perform tasks that they never would perform in reality which they couldn’t possibly be trained for – this is particularly true any time Kara or Lee go all James Bond on us, which happens multiple times in the series. I get that there only so many humans left, but surely there was the odd soldier among them? A better show would have had minor characters feature in these episodes instead.
The main story arc often gets confused with the plot of the week – I suspect this is a casualty of the 20+ episodes per season mandate of the show. The show would have been better off in a 13 episode format, where they didn’t have to make up plots for episodes, plots pretty much entirely incidental to the story arc.
Character motivation is too often at the service of the plot: Characters waiver back and forth with their attitudes towards the Cylons and each other. Bill and Lee in particular feel like they are acting out some kind of elaborate farce at times – how many times are they going to fight and make up? I’d believe it if their relationship was co-dependent or something; but both appear too competent to go through these motions over and over and over again. Why does this happen? To generate conflict that otherwise shouldn’t be there. The most egregious example of character motivation at the service of the plot is in the characters’ behaviours towards Baltar, which change so much and so often it’s exasperating, all to advance the plot.
The score: The score is not very good and is often over-bearing – or at least the mix is. At its worst, it reminds me of bad Hollywood blockbuster scores.
At times, the female characters still sound like the voices of little boys: So much sci-fi suffers from “little boys imagining women” syndrome, and this show is no exception. The show has a number of strong female characters – Roslyn is the most obvious – and mostly it isn’t a problem, but particularly some of the Cylons can be heard occasionally spouting dialogue that was clearly written by a man who doesn’t speak to women very often; dialogue that reeks of fan-boy day-dreaming. (I am thinking of Xena, here.)
These are pretty huge flaws, and they keep the show from being one of the great TV shows ever made, or even among the greats of the Golden Age of Television, of which it was a part.
But I still think it’s a pretty good program, and it does deserve at least some recognition, especially for its gigantic balls in tackling US foreign policy – albeit by allegory – when nobody else dared.
One of the few shows I'm rating a 9. So well done, just go and watch it.
I've rewarched This séries 4 times now, so I kind know all the plots but every time I see baltar saying "I know about farming", on the last episode, I start crying. It's a very powerfull scene that kinda evokes the whole series.
This is a must watch for any space show fan.
Although, the religious things is kind of annoying especially by the end.
At one point it became a soap opera in space, but it was still enjoyable.
So say we all
This is the best science fiction show on TV. All killer, no filler. A defined beginning, middle and end. A finale that leaves you feeling satisfied and wanting to restart the show from the beginning. So say we all.
I watched it for the second time 18 years after the premiere. The series has not actually aged. The twists are exciting, and the moral dilemmas served to us remain valid. I recommend it because it is not an ordinary space opera.
Held up incredibly well on rewatch, fifteen or so years later.
I don’t know why people like this show
Good show though like many and in particular sci-fi it has its faults, humans up against a far superior force with the end result, humans survive. Like with pretty much all sci-fi it is what is in my opinion their downfall, they are predictable and it makes the end result boring which spoils many otherwise good series! The amount of times I've seen a sci fi series were the humans are up against some alien foe often a foe that is just simply in another dimension in terms of advancement with the humans always finding a way to save the day is now quite frankly boring. It's the same old rinse and repeat over and over and over again.
In terms of battlestar galactica, there are some characters I grew to detest very quickly with Mary McDonnell (President Laura Roslin) at the top of the list, she’s irritating obnoxious, vindictive and crooked, one could say she was basically everything politicians are, there wasn’t a single episode were I didn’t wish someone would put a bullet in her head and finish her!
Another one I grew to detest very quickly was Edward James Olmos (Admiral Adama), not as bad as president Laura Roslin in that he had his moments but was also plenty obnoxious and vindictive!
So to summarise, good series with the usual predictable ending which ditracted a lot from the series for me.
Also spoiled for me by the two characters I mentioned above which as I said I grew to immensely dislike with each passing episode. I progressively wished they would get killed off as the episodes passed and I have to say I would have had great satisfaction had they both been killed off very early in the series. I started to want to fast forward the series anytime they were on, that’s how much I grew to dislike their characters, especially Roslin!!! They really put me off the series!
Since this has all happened before, it is happening now and will happen again I will say this. I have watched this series in its entirety and rarely rewatch anything. Since SyFy Channel here in the U.S. is running a #BSG Big Frakkin' Marathon I have not only been sup supped into hours of this most excellent television Space Opera but I am actually adding it to my stuff on YouTube TV DVR too, dare I say, to watch again.
"So say ME all!"
The ultimate science fiction war series. Unafraid of taking risks nor deleting characters that had run their course. Fantastic acted with thoughtful and riveting writing. Effects and action kept one's attention. It really felt like it had a planned story to tell all the time with a definitive ending that you either will love or hate, but it do feel like it was planned from the beginning.
simply the best sci-fi series ever made. Great actors, great story telling. not just nice cgi like a lot of shows especially these days.
The was probably the greatest re-imagining of a series I've ever seen. The revamped story was so intriguing... so compelling. I can't... I can't. I didn't catch this when it first came out. I started in the middle of season two, and then binged the previous episodes. OMG!!! Beginning to end, I was on the edge of my seat... couch. Also, Grace Park... WOW,!!
Honestly, at the time, it was one of the greatest shows on TV. The acting is great. The stories are serious. The music is amazing. The effects are fantastic. Also, I love that Caprica City is Vancouver BC. :-)
One of the best shows by Sci Fi.
So much better than anything I expected comming out of the scy-fi network.
Own Complete Series (Season 1 to 4)
The best space sci-fi ever made. So Say We All! Very sad that Richard 'Apollo' Hatch died this year, his last film is released this year ... Diminuendo, go see it!
This show id great throughout. Though I will admit that the latter seasons are much harder to appreciate full on a single watch through. There is a lot of subtlety and story that you have to figure out and I can see how a cursory glance may make it less appealing. Granted that there are a few irritating decisions made in the final episode, but that doesn't detract from the amazingness of the last seasons themselves.
Oh Starbuck you will be missed.
Wow, what can I say? This is genius from start to finish. Without question the best thing I've watched on TV to date.
And the fact the wife enjoyed a sci fi show as much if not more than me speaks volumes!
This show is a must, I can't stress enough how great it is - a true masterpiece of TV history....
Having watched the Miniseries (first 2 episodes) I can say I'm intrigued. I was a big fan of the original 1978 - 1979 (yes I'm that old, lol, but I'm talking the mid 80's repeats) and never got around to watching this reboot / remake. I've seen the webseries / movie Blood and Chrome, which I didn't enjoy, straight to DVD nonesense and to me it didn't work. But after 3hrs give or take of watching, I'm looking forward to seeing where this darker version takes us. The production value isn't that high compared to other TV Sci-Fi series released around or before the same time. Stargate, Star Trek Enterprise, Farscape. Good characters from what seen in the miniseries so far, hoping there's a little more depth to them when the actual series starts, but this sci-fi buff likes what he see's so far. Can't wait to explore more of the BSG universe
one of the best show ever made
Space opera at it's finest
Was the best drama on TV. Very good.
제일 좋아하는 SF 드라마 ㅜㅜ 언젠가 다시 정주행 해야지
BEST TV SHOW EVERY!!! WISH I WATCHED IT SOONER
it was wonderful tv show.
Even if you're not a scifi fan you're gonna love this series for the character development!
First 2 seasons were really good, 3rd season was pretty good, & the last season was quite bad (not just bad in comparison to the first few seasons, but legitimately bad)
fantastic. one of the best tv shows I've ever watched
the writers of this show really did an amazing job! Fleshed out characters and an ending with closure, do not find that in tv series often!
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant.
Amazing scifi series... Definitely one of the best.
I expected OK... I got AMAZING. It has unseated my 2nd favorite show ever aired.
The best show I have ever watched. no debate.
THE BEST SciFi SHOW EVER!!

Watching order
Because there are some issues with watching this, here is the order.
Copying from the site in case it ever goes down, but this info came from here: http://thunderpeel2001.blogspot.com/2010/02/battlestar-galactica-viewing-order.html
It's probably more confusing here on trakt, so go to the above linked site for a better layout.

Razor (101 minute extended version - not the 81 minute broadcast version)
Important note: This was originally broadcast just before Season 4, but chronologically it fits here, telling more of the Pegasus's story. Some people argue it's better to watch after Season 3, as originally broadcast, but it makes most sense to watch it here.
The reason that the placement of Razor is a hotly contested issue among BSG fans is because of a bit of dialogue at the very end (in the last 10 minutes) which sets the tone for Season 4 (barely even a spoiler). Everything else in this TV movie is not a spoiler.
So why place it here, and not where it was originally broadcast, if there's any sort of issue? Because, chronologically, the story is set here, and by the time you reach the end of Season 3, the story of Pegasus will feel like ancient history. Indeed, that was the complaint echoed around the internet from fans after Razor originally aired -- it had nothing to do with what was going on in the story at that time.
As a result of this, most fans agree it's better to watch Razor here. In doing so, you'll appreciate the story more and it will have greater emotionally resonance. In short: I highly recommend that you follow my advice and watch it here.
There is one small caveat, however: In order to deal with the above dialogue issue, and so not to unintentionally alter the tone of Season 3, I have two, very specific instructions that I recommend that you follow for your absolute optimum enjoyment.
I will try not to spoil anything with these instructions, so pay attention. You need to press MUTE on your TV (and/or turn off any subtitles) in the following two moments. Both of these moments occur in the last 10 minutes of the story, so you can relax and enjoy the first 90 mins before you need to worry.
Press MUTE when:
and shortly afterwards:
That's it! That's all you have to worry about. Two very small moments, and even if you don't unmute it, it's not a huge spoiler, it just unintentionally alters the tone of Season 3 if you don't, so do try your best to follow my instructions.
