All the Light We Cannot See 2023

Maybe a bit foolish of me but I was really hoping the characters would be speaking their native language. It would hit so much harder hearing this in german and french instead of a weird mix of a bunch of english accents.

WOW. This is a masterpiece of storytelling. The casting was stellar and the performances were magical. The cinematography captured the grittiness of occupied France and the horrors of the invaders were on full display. If I have any complaints in the storytelling they might be twofold, all Germans were portrayed as the darkest of evil (I don’t believe it was that black and white) and the connection between Werner and Marie was a little too much of a rushed fairytale at the end. But, the whole was a wonderful romantic journey, in the classical sense of the power of lofty ideals rather than in human attraction. I give this limited series a 9 (superb) out of 10. This is a really well done show. The acting is excellent and what action it has is quite impactful. Definitely worth a watch.

If you have not read the book, I think this would be thoroughly enjoyable. Unfortunately I have read the book (several times) & was thoroughly disappointed.

My Wife read the book and I had not, so we went in with different perspectives on things. First, we both immediately agreed how great it was to see Hugh Laurie speak without an accent (while he is masterful at them), but Mark Ruffalo's accident was very distracting and I really like him in the role, but they should have cast someone native.

The story was very intriguing, and I truly enjoyed it, meanwhile my wife had some things to say in comparison between the two mediums, but overall it was well worth the watch.

Why do all the Germans have vaguely German accents, but all the French have English accents?

Where to begin. I was quite disappointed by this movie. What to expect from an American production that prefers to alter history instead of keeping it more realistic. I’ve not read the book but I still disappointed.
I don’t know what rode Mark Ruffalo to invent a completely random and immensely distracting accent. Everyone else basically spoke normally. The German actors spoke almost perfect English, even though their characters were German. What a weird choice. No French actors for the French characters for some reason but a Frenchman playing a German. Netflix really knows how to cast .
Generally it was just too much of everything. The only enjoyable actress was Aria Mia Loberti. I’d expect them to cast someone who can see and then badly pretend to be blind but that fortunately was not the case. Really well done. Louis Hofmann was enjoyable as well and cannot believe how his appearance changed from the movies I know him off.

I know this show has split opinions. Some people like it, some people don't. I personally thought this was great. I am someone who has read the book and loved it so I definitely did notice the changes here however I wasn't mad about it because it made it work for TV. The actress they chose to play the older version of Marie was absolutely phenomenal and I felt like the cinematography was absolutely stunning. One of the main issues I had, (it was also an issue I had with the book) is how the timeline continuously jumps from past to present as this can take you out of the story slightly rather than further engage you. I thought the actors were brilliant, the story is simple but effective.

Overall just a really good show.

Stopped paying attention after a few minutes because it‘s absolute nonsense that both French and German people would speak English. Would have been so much better in their native languages.

[Netflix] An adaptation that loses the essence of the book from the first minute. It is a version of the story that seems destined for a children's audience, with stereotyped and undeveloped characters, strange accents, wasted actors and corny scenes that cause shame in others. There is little or no suspense, with an overly simplified story, which is based on the most clichés of war cinema. It doesn't seem to have much interest in giving consistency to the characters, lost between maudlin and embarrassing dialogues.

Fantastic story! Wonderful life lessons.

Great book but this... the writing is stilted and the melodrama is over the top, which makes it hard to watch. It could have been done so much better. But the characters are wooden and cliche'd. I was hoping for so much more.

"Reinhold von Rumpel"?

Are you kidding me?!

"All The Light We Cannot See" is an enthralling series with impressive acting and a storyline that keeps viewers hooked. The ensemble cast, including standout lead performances, brings depth to a gripping plot full of drama and suspense. However, Mark Ruffalo's accent work falls flat, occasionally disrupting the show's immersive experience. Despite this, the show remains a highly recommended watch for its strong narrative and entertainment value.

Coming from someone who has read the novel, this was bad. I realize this is "based on the novel" but why not just stick to what was originally written and beloved by many and make it 8 episodes to fit it all in? The changes made to this adaptation didn't work for me. (Where is Frederick?, Where is the epilogue?) I realize the story is not linear in the novel but the way the series jumped around was unnecessary and confusing. And the casting was really bad as well. The Werner actor is too old for the orphanage scenes and why Mark Ruffalo? He's a fine actor but his accent was so distracting. From the director "...but as Levy mentioned, the ending they created instills hope." Yes, I HOPE someone eventually remakes this series and sticks more to what was written.

It was definitely okay... but not much more than that. Stereotypical characters and pretty mediocre story. Worth a watch but not really memorable.

This romantic historical drama is a must see. There are only 4 episodes [a little under 4 hours to watch them all] an easy binge. Casting, story line, cinematography, all of it is all just captivating. Now - stop reading reviews and go watch it, I promise it will be worth your 4 hours of time.
