We went this way..he went that way.. I asked Hollywood, where'd he go?! Hollywood says Wheeeere'd whooooo gooooooooooo!!!
You'll struggle to find a more cheesy film, even so 'Top Gun' is a super film.
I need to check out more of Tony Scott's work because he has yet to let me down from the flicks of his that I've seen; on that note I'd put this below 'Crimson Tide' and Unstoppable', but it is still one of his best I'm sure. The action is great, as is the pacing and music; even with "Take My Breath Away" being slightly overused at one point.
Tom Cruise is excellent in the lead role, no doubt the perfect choice to play Maverick. Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Tom Skerritt, Michael Ironside... ace cast! Tim Robbins, Andy Dufresne himself, is even involved too. They all commit to their roles and give noteworthy performances.
'Top Gun: Maverick' is literally right around the corner. I'm expecting positive things from that sequel.
The movie might be showing its age, or maybe I'm showing mine. The structure just felt off. The pacing was much too slow until the last quarter. There's something grating about Maverick's character—there's supposed to be, but I couldn't really find anything to like about him. And of course the romance is entirely unnecessary, but that's been a Hollywood problem since long before this movie (and still is).
This film was ok I guess but I just found it to be overwhelmingly boring. For an action it just seemed to have absolutely nothing going for it. I rated it slightly higher than I was originally going to because I must take into account the year it was released and the impact it must have had back then but still it could have been better.
I read a few reviews and in my opinion some people are way off. This is by far one of the best movies I've ever seen. Yes the soundtrack is a little repetitive and yes it's slow in the beginning, BUT THATS HOW YOU SET UP A STORY. Fantastic characters and storyline. Brilliant casting and acting from just about everyone. I could write for days about this film and the emotions it gave me but I'll just say I was born 18 years after this film released and despite growing up in the superhero film era with laziness like Kong vs Godzilla and Matrix 4, I can see that those are terrible films and this one is TOP GUN baby
Top Gun is a movie that is full of cliché with a plot that follows along the lines of a blueprint that is typical for similar movies of that time. It was a movie for the MTV generation with lots of rock music. This wasn´t about the story. Teenage boys wanted to be Maverick and the girls fancied the love story (OK, probably not all of them but a lot)
It still can be an entertaining movie today if you keep that in mind. Just tune down the cheesy stuff. Enjoy the flight scenes, the soundtrack is still great and produced a lot of classic tunes.
Didn't work for me. The plot is non-existent, the music is annoyingly repetitive and oftentimes oddly placed, and the entire movie rides on Tom Cruise's shoulders. I genuinely liked Goose more than Maverick and thought Maverick was kind of an awful guy beginning to end. Yet again, a movie I was told is a "must-see" disappoints. Maybe it's just not my cup of tea.
*One Of The 'Coolest' Movies Ever*
Top gun, loved and loathed by many alike. The film that launched Tom Cruise's career. I'm a student and watching Top Gun for me is an amazing uplifting experience. A 'feel good' movie that could lift the worse of moods. The film executes cheese to perfection, yes there are some silly lines but there are some real good ones too! The aerial action sequences are truly amazing, and for 1986 nothing short of magnificent.
Top Gun is a film that achieves its objectives, to entertain. If you're looking for intelligent writing or mass thought provocation, this film isn't for you. Top Gun is best suited to those who desire to switch off their brain and enjoy.
My score: 7/10.
Somehow I had never seen this movie before, a lot of films are a time and place, let’s just say I completely missed both. The jet flying but also hilarious that most of it is training missions, the romantic subplot is such a bore and really tanks most of the movie. Poor Goose got done dirty and his wife and children didn’t get to keep his dog tags because asshole Maverick whips them into the fucking ocean. I could tell you more but then I’d have to kill you.
It's enjoyable, but whoever did the soundtrack pulled the greatest scam. It's just laziness. Either I'm on the highway to the danger zone or you're taking my breath away. Those were my only two options.
Terrible pilot school melodrama with mandatory bromance and improvised teacher-student love relationship. Buckets of sweat, propaganda, and cocky smirks with homoerotic undertones. That wouldn’t be a problem if the movie wasn’t boring as hell. Maybe the flight scenes with the cheesy soundtrack on top were spectacular for their time, but unfortunately, my attention span hardly made it through. Everything looks like those random videoclips they use at karaoke.
Very 80s. The music in this is top notch. The flying shots are great. The volleyball scene is incredible. Tom Cruise wearing aviators is iconic.
Reading some of the other reviews, it’s funny to me how so many people are complaining nowadays about films having a political agenda (even when there is none most of the time it’s being called out), but when the agenda’s as obvious as it is here, they either miss it or purposefully ignore it. Like, this film has the words propaganda piece written all over it, and its very effective at being that, even if it’s ultimately below average as a film. It’s got some good action, and the core characters are solid. The story and dialogue aren’t all that strong, however. It's also so cheesy that it gets a little hard to take seriously. For example, the direction in the sex scene and some of the music selection (the licensed music in particular) are kinda laughable. Overall, I just don’t think it accomplishes enough, there’s way too much time wasted on glamorizing this naval aviator lifestyle, which was probably on the top of the priority list given that the navy had a hand in producing this, but that’s also the most boring and disingenuous stuff.
4.5/10
boring as hell… and the scenes where they’re flying aren’t enjoyable they’re just dizzying, loud and ANNOYING. maybe all action movies are like this idk or maybe this movie is just bad
The romance part is so bad. The female character's job was to be pretty and love Maverick like crazy after a couple of eye contacts. I don't even remember her name. I haven't seen top gun: maverick yet, but I believe this problem won't exist in it otherwise it won't be such highly recommended.
Curious to see what this was about as it was released 6 years before I was born and never fancied watching it really. Back in the day I’m sure this soundtrack was top tier but watching it in 2022, it just gets on my nerves. If I hear either of the songs used again it’ll be too soon. The story was ok and the effects for the time were pretty decent but just couldn’t empathise with any character except maybe Goose a little bit. I’ll still go and see Maverick in the hope it’ll be better than this as I’ve heard good things so willing to give it a chance seeing as though it’s more modern
Jesus, I hate us army propaganda in movies
horrible. feeling not exist. Tom Cruise sucks
The year is 1986, the U.S. and Soviet Union are in the midst of a cold war, the threat of a nuclear winter is immanent. Navel War-Fair is the answer for both countries. F-14 Tomcats! Mig 28s! Get inverted and give them the Bird, aka keeping up foreign relations.
Welcome to the... Danger Zone
Ah, what a classic. This movie was my childhood. My play count is probably a major underestimation if the stories my mum and nanna tell me are true. I watched this so much as a child, and loved it to pieces. Though apparently, I walked out when Goose died every time. And yet I could recite it verbatim while walking through the supermarket.
To this day, I do not think there is a more beautiful aircraft than the mighty Tomcat. Others might do it better, but that design is iconic. As are half the cast here, and all of them bring what you came to see. Though I think the best has to be Wolfman, Goose and Jester. Ironside just has a voice and a presence you can't ignore. And the humour and camaraderie of both Wolfman and Goose is sublime. You can truly believe these guys love one another to death. Maverick's face while trying to cope with Goose's death is some of the best acting Cruise has ever done.
I could watch this movie a thousand times and never get sick of it. Propaganda piece or not, it had everything the growing boy in me needed back then, and it still thrills that inner child every single time I throw it on now as an adult.
my need for speed will be forever fueled by you TC.
Top Gun is a film that achieves its objectives, to entertain. If you're looking for intelligent writing or mass thought provocation, this film isn't for you. Top Gun is best suited to those who desire to switch off their brain and enjoy. TOP GUN rocks, plain and simple.
"Gentleman, welcome to Top-Gun!"
[7.6/10] It was once put to me that what the 1980s had over other decades’ art and culture was sincerity. And I never really bought it. Sure, the mainstream pop culture of the eighties lacked the aloof cynicism of the nineties, or the winking meta-ness of what followed. But to me at least, the cultural output from that decade always lacked a certain truth, a certain believability, a certain lived-in realism, that made it hard to buy as sincere. I rarely feel like I’m watching real people in real situations in a cultural period where artifice and bombast were the order of the day.
Well, after finally watching Top Gun, I may have to rethink my stance. Because this movie is as deep as a thimble. Its characters are all over-the-top archetypes. To paraphrase another 1980s film, its only volume setting is up to eleven. And yet, god help me, I buy all of it.
Yes, the sky-jockeys who populate the U.S. Navy’s elite fighter pilot school, the titular Top Gun, barely have one dimension, let alone two. But I completely buy that these airborne cowboys would be that enthusiastic yet shallow. Yes, their personas and love lives are a bunch of dudebro cliches-in-the-making. But having met many a testosterone-filled young man (and even, regrettably, been one myself). I completely buy their dynamic. And yes, their daredevil antics above the clouds and the importance they place in their war games comes off pretty goofy at times. But by god, I buy that as totally, one-hundred percent real.
I don’t know what to tell you, folks. Whether it’s the subject matter, the choice of characters, or a collection of cracker-jack performances, director Tony Scott made a film that is simultaneously over-the-top to the point of ridiculous, and yet somehow totally believable. There is truth in this art, however far from the sort of grounded naturalism I think of when I think of sincerity.
Much of that stems from the focus of the film. It’s easy to write Top Gun off as a simple action movie, if only because its action is so darn good. Decades later, and the stunts haven't aged a day. Scott, cinematographer Jeffrey L. Kimball, and editors Chris Lebenzon and Billy Weber do superlative work shooting and cutting the bravura fighter jet sequences in the film.
Kimball knows how to frame the supersonic jets to underscore the mix of danger and balletic grace within these flying machines that cannot help but impress. Lebenzon and Weber know how to arrange staccato cuts to emphasize the pace of the action, while mixing wide shots of the jets with close-ups of the pilots faces so as not to lose the humanity amid the larger-than-life spectacle. And the jargon and banter that gets tossed around highlights the difficulty and complexity of what these pilots are attempting, but the composition of the action makes the give-and-take between rivals and enemies in the sky still comprehensible.
The sound mixing and design team deserves special recognition. While the acrobatic moves are given extra excitement in the film’s glory shots, speed is a trickier thing to communicate. It’s there that the wooshes and whirs of the planes bolting past one another does the work, situating audibly what might otherwise be lost visually.
And yet, for all of the outstanding cinematic craftsmanship and visual acumen on display, Top Gun is, at heart, a character movie. Sure, there’s some appropriately eighties macho juice from making it about vaguely homoerotic rival fighter pilots, but this film could be about top hockey players or car designers or jockeys and not lose much in the translation. There’s a sense that, but for the sex and bits of blue humor, this is a gussied up Disney sports movie.
The fighter pilot competition isn’t really the point. It’s a foundation to build the friendship between Maverick and Goose, the romance between him and Charlie, the rivalry between him and iceman, and the mentorship between him and Commander Metcalf. I spent three paragraphs waxing rhapsodic about the aviation awesomeness at play, but the whole thing is a mere vehicle (pardon the expression) through which to play out those relationships.
And again, by god, I buy each one of them. There is a bro-y truth to the spirit of camaraderie between Maverick and his partner, Goose. Goose is, quietly, my favorite character in the film. He’s fun, wild, and self-effacing, with an affection for his wife and kids, and a just-happy-to-be-here giddiness (and occasionally seriousness) about the whole thing that makes his tragic loss feel like a loss for the audience as well.
You could rightfully take issue with Charlie as a fantasy of a love interest, in the “She’ll play hard to get for everyone except you” variety. Her cool girl bona fides mixed with her putting up a tough front until going weak in the knees for Maverick is fair cause to write her off.
More charitably though, she’s someone who has the gumption and self-possessed nature to bite back at Maverick’s bravado. She has her own career and interests, isn’t afraid to take control in the relationship, and gives as good as she gets. Like all 1980s love interests, her story is ultimately subservient to the protagonist’s. But generously, I think it’s also fair to read this as two people who had different ideas about what their lives would be who had that all turned upside down when they met someone who was their match, in more ways than one.
Both rival pilot Iceman and Top Gun commander Metcalf are thinner characters. But behind Iceman’s “Stan Darsh”-style tweaking of Maverick, he has weight as the rule-bound alternative to Maverick’s cavalier style, and legitimate criticisms of the main character. Metcalf is given some of the most cheesy lines in the entire film (which is saying something) but Tom Skerret delivers them with such conviction and feeling that you believe them, especially when he says them directly to Maverick.
That’s the film’s secret weapon. It spends twice as much time with these characters in conversation with one another as it does with them flying for or against one another. As bro-y and outlandish as their interactions are, there is that honest, believable quality in how Maverick and Goose raz one another, in how he and Charlie playfully flirt, in how he and Iceman try to get a rise out of one another, and how Commander Metcalf takes on a fatherly air with the wayward young ace. As loony as they are, these players spark off one another beautifully, which sells the humanity in an otherwise cartoonish film.
Which leads to the elephant in the room -- Tom Cruise. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that this is his best performance as an actor. Even in his best work, Cruise often feels like someone doing a lot of capital-A acting. And, frankly, you can still see that a bit here in some of the scenes where he’s supposed to be grieving Goose.
But this may be Cruise at his most human on-screen. Long before the wide-eyed, Xenu-fearing creepster arrived on the scene to remind us of an alien imitating human warmth, Top Gun gave us a playful, caring, vulnerable, confident young man who feels three-dimensional in the moment even if the writing for him is basic and arguably formulaic. Maverick sparks off of everyone else in the film, and lines that are goofy or hokey seem plausible coming from the smirking hotshot nursing a not-so-secret pain. To make such a high-volume character feel real is no easy feat, but Cruise is electric and believable in he role at every turn.
The other big secret here is that Top Gun has a surprisingly solid script. The plot here isn’t breaking any new ground. But the opening scene does a superb job of communicating how Maverick is reckless but not callous, wanting to be the best but also caring deeply for his friends. The call and responses for Maverick’s “buzzing the tower” show some start construction. The way he ultimately earns the respect of Iceman is legitimately cathartic given the terms of their rivalry. And the simple but potent turn of Maverick making peace with the loss of his father and his best friend at the same time shows a deft bit of storytelling. No one’s going to mistake this movie for Shakespeare, but it’s sneakily good at what it sets out to do.
That’s what I’d say about the film as a whole. There’s undoubtedly parts of it that haven't stood the test of time. The soundtrack, for instance, is abysmal, whether it’s the cornball tones of “Danger Zone”, the gooey ridiculum of “Take My Breath Away”, or the laugh-worthy synthesized score that permeates the rest of the film.
Still, the bones of Top Gun are good. This movie doesn’t have anything to say beyond trite truisms, but it’s full of great performances, outstanding set pieces, vivid characters, and a sound story. The movie is pure popcorn, but damnit, it’s some well-made popcorn.
More to the point, as absurd as the commander giving the standard “You’re a loose cannon!” speech is, as campy as the infamous volleyball scene is, as cliched as the realization of Maverick chasing his father’s ghost in the sky is, this is, against all odds, one of the most earnest movies I’ve seen. It may be overblown and over-the-top in almost everything it does, but the figures at the center of it buy in one-hundred percent, and so you do too. The pop culture of the 1980s may never be my cup of tea, but if all of the decades’ films were as sincere as this one, I’d be more willing to risk spilling it all over my uniform.
Snooze fest if you are not into such action of such fighter planes. Could barely finish the movie, it wasn’t cringy just meh. Acting was decent (Tom is in his early stages), the story didn’t translate well and the action was bland even though it’s impressive knowing how it must’ve been shot
3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Top Gun’:
That music. I hated it. Pretty sure there must be only three songs on the soundtrack, because we had to hear the same tunes over and over and over again. Yeah, not a fan.
I watched this in preparation for the wildly-successful sequel, which I have no doubt will live up to my expectations. This film here is not a difficult one to beat. The story, while somewhat engaging, is still very surface level. And the flying scenes were kinda hard to track. More confusing than compelling.
Tom Cruise. It’s hard not to watch him and analyze what exactly shot him so high to stardom. He oozes charisma here, but I couldn’t help but think that he definitely grew into his movie star looks. Kilmer had those already.
A thoroughly entertaining film, with beautiful visuals, exhilerating action sequences, great performances and a satisfying story.
I was not aware this is so cringy
As a movie I had seen relatively recently, I still wanted to watch it again before I saw the new one. This is very much an 80’s movie, with an 80’s soundtrack, and is simply a good time like many 80’s movies are. For how popular this movie was at the time, I’m surprised it took 36 years for a sequel. While it certainly won’t be for everyone, if fighter jets, Tom Cruise, or 80’s movies are your thing, I think you will enjoy it.
Rating: 3/5 - 7.5/10 - Worth Watching
It sure was a movie from the 80s! It wasn't all bad things, especially if you can just listen to 80s music on repeat. I had a good laugh about how many times the movie just vamped "take my breath away" in the background. The movie was interesting with the storyline and the actors made their interactions enjoyable. I swear Tom Cruise was smirking in 80% of his time on screen. Some good jokes, some strong action, some sad tones, and some romance. Really all you can ask for from a classic Hollywood movie.
The longest and most propagandistic game of gay chicken ever, with equal amounts of no homo.
they must do something truly special in Top Gun: Maverick because the original still holds up as one of if not the best films ever made!!
72 I In the first ten minutes, Top Gun already made us sweat. The sequences of the jet planes were a great achievement for a film that was made in 1986. It made us wonder how they shot that with less advanced technology than now. How many errors did they make when they made those shots. That's why making a sequel to Top Gun is a great idea. With better technology for filmmaking, the possibility to make this kind of film gorgeous is high. This is a good time to watch Top Gun, because the sequel will be released soon in May 2022. And most critics who have already watched the sequel said it is a much better film.
While watching Top Gun we could immediately tell if this was an old film. The way the color grading of this film chooses and the sound of the music brought 1980s nuance. Sometimes the music sound like a lullaby, if we are tired while watching Top Gun, we could befall asleep easily.
The characters are fun people to watch especially Maverick and Goose. Their relationship is heartwarming and funny. How Goose reacts to whatever Maverick does sometimes is hilarious. Maverick and Goose are not their real name, it is more like their initial in the Navy squad. They are a great duo in a jet plane and daily life.
There are some sweet moments with Maverick when he remembers his father. There is his senior named Viper who teaches Maverick how to become a good pilot. Viper had a lot of experiences and was there with Maverick's father in battle. Maverick and Viper's interaction brought Top Gun in a more serious tone or we could say more drama genre type.
There is the drama side and there is the romance side. Charlie not only became Maverick's instructor in the aircraft hangar but also in bed. Their relationship does not that enhance the story quality, it bit boring actually. Maverick and Goose are better than Maverick and Charlie. But boring not necessarily means bad. Maverick relationship with Charlie still made his character develop to become a strong pilot. There was a bad event that happened in Top Gun and Charlie reassure Maverick to let it go and bounce back from grief. It was a bit of a sweet scene just like Maverick talking with Viper.
We almost watch his face in every action film, who else if not Tom Cruise. He is probably the best action actor, the most consistent one that Hollywood has ever had. His face attracted many people to watch the films. He never looks old. Tom Cruise is a good actor and he lowkey proved it in this film.

Extra star for Kenny Loggins
Top Gun is a riveting action film from director Tony Scott. The story follows a hot shot Navy pilot who’s sent to an elite fighter school to learn aerial combat tactics. Starring Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, and Michael Ironside, the cast is pretty good. But the real stars of the film are the F-14 fighter jets, and Scott does an excellent job at capturing the intensity and excitement of the aerial maneuvers. The soundtrack is also especially well-done, and features such hit songs as “Danger Zone” and “Take My Breath Away.” Adrenaline packed and incredible entertaining, Top Gun is an iconic ‘80s action film.
Yes. Classic and not boring
Well, I watched this in order to be prepared for top gun Maverick which critical consensus seems to suggest I will need to watch, but I have to say I was not drawn in by the human drama. I felt no chemistry between any of the characters. Not even impressed by the dogfighting, even though I had bought the 4K remaster from Apple TV and watched with my living room speakers on...
Recently revisited this with the 3D conversion, and while the conversion was cheap and cut rate, the original film still shines through. It may be dated these days, but still has good action scenes (even if you can't tell where the jets are going half the time) and a nice tale of friendship with Maverick and Goose. If you haven't seen it yet, catch it before the sequel hits the screens!
Years without seeing it, in blu-ray greatly improves the image. It launched Tom Cruise and increased the enlistments in the navy. It is still entertaining, the songs well, ode to the F-14, great aerial scenes, although they fire several times the same missile
This gives you the full range of emotions, and it's pretty cheesy. It does exactly what it needs to do to grab your attention and keep it.
I don't care if it's supposed to be military propaganda, it's a fun and thrilling time.
I expected all the danger zone stuff and high fives. But I didn't see the volleyball or how much as a 90s kid synth drums just screams pink and mist in my mind...
Are we sure he's always bringing the hot ladies home?

The movie have a good story but i didn't connect with it and i get so bored, but hey... I liked the music in the sex scene, lol
Key film of the 1980s
First time rewatching this after watching Top Gun: Maverick (a looot).
Definitely like this movie much more now, I didn't know the sequel had so many nods to this one and seeing Goose and future Rooster was much more emotional now. Also the music rocks.
Also surprising that in this day and age there is no prequel tv-series about Maverick's dad.
i never expected to enjoy this nearly as much as i did. i dont know shit about planes but i absolutely adored it. tom cruise was the huge standout obviously, i understand why this is a beloved movie.
In the early 90's, I was a teenager and this was A MOVIE! Now these planes still fly nicely. :)
So many sweaty people in the 80s …
Watched the 4k Blu-ray - what a wonderful release. Only film I've watched in: VHS record off Broadcast, Official VHS, DVD, 2D Blu, 3D Blu and now UHD.
Atmos track was actually used in this too - loved the jets buzzing around all over. My most watched movie ever and it's still bringing me joy.
This was overrated jingoistic nonsense tbh.
Goose :/ I cried so much
I finally got around to watching this ultimate dick measuring, dude-bro movie. It's absolutely fantastic if egocentricism is your juice.
5/10 - for the tolerance and professionalism of Anthony Edwards and Kelly McGillis.
purchased on Google play defo worth buying.
I like top gun and I like how Tom cruise play it and I like it
Highly recommended if you have a surround sound setup, the jets and the music will blow your backside off.
RIP Goose, although I wish I were made to feel a bit more devastated about his death. The film kind of moved on from the emotion surrounding it very fast, and I didn’t feel connected to him well enough to feel a proper blow.
But I don’t think this film is suited for emotions anyway - it’s all about the visual and audio awe. And being reckless.
If you can’t sit down, watch Top Gun, and enjoy yourself, even a little bit then I’m sorry to be the one to tell you but you don’t like movies.
It is very melodramatic. I expected it to be more like an action film. In the middle it became a romantic movie. I love "Take my breath away", but they used it so much that it burned. Honestly, it bored me a bit.
I had not seen the original Top Gun from 1986, and when maverick came out 36 years after, I watched both of them back to back. The new one has the stunts, but the first one was a better movie for me.
This write-up considers both movies together.
Tom Cruise plays Maverick, a reckless but extremely skilled fighter pilot in both films. In the first film, he has a companion, Goose. In the second one, we have Goose's son to tie it to the previous film.
The first one was the story of Maverick, as much as it was of the elite fighter pilot school, Top Gun. Maverick was cocky, but at one point in the film, he becomes vulnerable, has doubts about his abilities, and seeks advice. All signs show the hero's journey, we don't see anything of that in the new one. That is largely due to the plot differences.
Top Gun: Maverick has a clear mission at the end of the movie. The entire focus of the film is inching slowly towards that culmination. This leaves very less for actual character development and their interplay. It is a thoroughly plot-driven movie. Whereas the older top gun was more balanced. The love interest made sense, the protagonist was someone you rooted for. In the later movie, we are mostly caring about the goal, which is a plot device for the stunts to shine.
There is no doubt that Top Gun Maverick wins hands down in the action and stunts department. Due to 36 years of advancements in filmmaking, the later top gun is way too polished and has better handling of set pieces and execution. Although the latter one has finesse, it feels artificial as the contrived mission that they have to fly at the end. The older Top Gun was still a brilliant feat in the eighties and its action felt more spirited among the two.
Being a character-driven film, the older Top Gun has a much more believable romantic arc. The same can not be said about the latter. Frankly, the omission of the entire arc with Jennifer Connelly would have made the script much tighter and a through-and-through plot-driven action film. This shows in the runtime too. the older one was 1hr 49mins, a good 30+ mins less than the new one. Yet it managed to deliver a much-rounded story.
This comparison does not mean I am panning the new one. Both these films are worth watching and are still better than average. I am just more biased towards the older.
A good action heartfelt patriotic film that follows a talented young naval pilot in flight school and his unexpected journey with his flying partner. The plot development was clear but a bit rushed. However it slows down during the important parts with some pretty cool filming in the sky. The acting of Tom Hanks is tremendous and makes the you root for the character the whole way. Sad plot twist turns into triumph in last 20 mins.
Despite some irksome and strange writing, some incredibly calculated direction and lively and grounded acting help the film coast its way through what would otherwise be the embodiment of the dolldrums to an absolutely thrilling final battle
the first half of the movie is about how pretty Tom Cruise is
80's cheese feel-good.
The film has its obvious flaws but still an enjoyable watch. Look forward to maverick.
7/10 - Good film, one that I'll happily watch again
I really had no idea what to expect from a movie where Tom Cruise flies fighter jets. No idea the kind of conflict, or even what kind of plot could come from that. I definitely didn't expect to get sucked into the world of Top Gun, but that's exactly what happened.
It's peak '80s cinema. Everything is ever-so-slightly heightened: the personalities of the characters, the flirty romance, the dogfights. I found myself empathizing with Maverick's struggles, laughing at his tomfoolery (no pun intended), and cheering on his budding romance with Charlotte. All of it was so fun and engaging, and I just had a great time. What more could you ask for when watching a movie?
And after hearing a lot about it, finally watched the so called masterpiece.Definitely it's a good watch. But expectations were higher my friend.
I feel like I now understand every single movie cliche
After a second watch things became clearer, the structure is very generic. Cruise's performance is great like almost all of his others. Amazing supporting cast with Val Kilmer, Michael Ironside, Kelly McGillis and of course Anthony Edwards as Goose. This movie has crazy visual effects way ahead of its time and still looks great today. The overall story is uninteresting and silly, love story requires a little more connection and passion but certainly isn't bad. This film seems to heavily over dramatize how sweaty everyone is. Maverick isn't exactly likeable and doesn't appear to have any character development throughout and everyone just learns to deal with it. The soundtrack is great but some certain songs are overplayed and used in the wrong times. Overall this movie is a fun experience if you don't think about it too much and just enjoy the minor adventure.
Keep smiling, because Tom Cruise smiles the entire movie—not really:laughing:
The film does not feature much action like other Tom Cruise films, even about the NAVY is not too deep. But this film is not boring and fun to watch. The ending of this film is just a sweetener, so there is an impression that they are great pilots.
" I feel the need......the need for speed!"
Kenny Loggins's song will be stuck in my head for the next few weeks.
That damned danger zone.
I'm a couple of hours away from seeing Top Gun: Maverick, and I wanted to write my review of the original beforehand, so that there would be no risk of having my perception colored by comparing it to the new one. I re-watched it last week, as I have only ever seen it once, and that was probably close to a decade ago.
The first phrase that comes to mind after watching this film is the oft repeated refrain of cinephiles everywhere: "they don't make them like this anymore". However, unlike it's typical usage, in this case that phrase actually came to mind for some negative reasons. This movie's plot is incredibly simple. Combine that with an aggressive pace and you get an experience that just feels shallow compared to what I expect out of a film. And that's not to say that shallow/simple movies aren't being made today. They most certainly are. But I'm not sure that new films of this type are ever going to have the massive cultural impact that Top Gun has secured over the last 36 years. All of this is to say, I think modern movies that want to secure a place in the cultural zeitgeist may have to aim a bit higher, which I'm hoping/expecting the sequel to do.
To the original movie's credit, it does feel cognizant of that fact that it is telling a very simple story. It's not like it tries and fails to be some more ambitious, multifaceted thought provoker. Nope. It's just Tom Cruise doing Tom Cruise things (although looking slightly more baby faced than I'm used to). He flies jets. He plays volleyball shirtless. He wins over the girl.
Despite all of these critiques, the movie is far from bad. There's plenty of fun to be had, with one liners aplenty and enough fighter jet action to keep most viewers engaged.
On the topic of fighter jet action, I do have one final critique. The dogfights that comprise the majority of the films runtime did outstay their welcome for me. I just think it's an inherent difficulty with the subject matter. It's tough to create visually engaging and distinct scenes when all you've got to work with is characters in cockpits and footage of jets against various sky backdrops. It just all starts to feel very same-y. As such, I think everything outside of the action (plot/characters/etc.) has to carry more weight than your typical action blockbuster. In this film, those elements were passable, but only just. Hopefully the sequel will find ways to improve in every respect.
A lot of movies in the 80’s some how were PG when they deserved a PG-13 or R rating even. Top Gun is one of them when it is a little too sexy to be PG. I am pretty surprised to learn now that wasn’t PG-13 or R.
It never felt like a family film to me. Despite not being very violent. The movie is entertaining with a great cast despite enemy pilots just showing up out of the blue.
Despite one death scene I don’t think it was even due to the enemy pilots. I guess it’s other counties trying their jets and they try to shoot down the American jets. Either way it didn’t feel like anyone was ever in danger from these one dimensional bad pilots that show up.
Went back to see this classic....an was bored through the first hour...the soundtrack seems to be only two songs...but loved the unibrow..only watched it to remind me for the upcoming new Top Gun release...did enjoy many of the continuity errors ...
Finally saw this one... I thought it wasn’t as good as everyone said but it is... way better than most of today’s film...
Val Kilmer was way underutilized in this movie, missed opportunity TBH
Minus the sketchy scene.
