Part of my 2022 Action Wednesdays
I don't know what it is with The Boondock Saints. I can watch this movie over and over, and I don't think I will ever be bored. There's so much stuff that makes this movie unique. The way Troy Duffy tells a story, the way the movie is shot, the odd, yet very likeable, main characthers, and of course, the one of a kind federal agent. Everything...Unique.
And so worth watching...even though I have seen the damn thing a hundred times.
It's not the most well edited film. It's not the highest budget film. In fact, there's a lot of things it isn't. But even now, nearing 20 years later, this film is in my top 10 favorite movies of all time. The humor, the soundtrack, and honestly even the underlying theme itself makes the movie worth watching all these years later.
It's become a tradition to watch this movie on St. Paddy's Day while drinking a Killian's or a Guiness.
Still one of my favorites.
When I was 18 or 20 I thought this movie was incredible. I'm now quite a few years older and this is just ridiculous. Terrible editing, most everyone turns in an amateur acting performance, the writing is awful. It's still entertaining but not nearly to the degree that it was when it came out, as there have been films that done the premise much better. And all these years later, I don't know how Willem Dafoe's character gets so sweaty and disheveled out of nowhere while explaining the big gun battle.
This thing is pretty dumb. It has pretty meh camera work, writing, acting, editing, and overall plot.
But for some reason I still enjoy myself watching it quite a bit. I remember watching this a lot when I was a young boy entering into rated R action films. I blame Josh Koch for this entirely. I'm pretty sure it is still one of his favorite films. Frankly, I get it. If you're interested in light, dumb action films you'll enjoy it. Willem Dafoe is certainly entertaining.
Gave this a 10 because it's HILARIOUS - Rocco and and the Detective/Inspector are the funniest guys on this show - and I even loved Reedus' SHITTY IRISH ACCENT. I love the two main characters, but the two other main characters are the funniest. This is a really feel-good movie.
Soooooo awesome movie! you have to watch it! :)))
a st patrick’s day tradition to watch this fine piece of epic cinematography
This does have that The Room quality to its direction; it feels like its made by an alien who’s completely unfamiliar with the genre he’s working in. The editing is quite a thing to behold. There’s zero rhythm to the pace, text and cuts appear in the weirdest places, dumb wailing guitar over random scenes, slow-mo, DnB, random fade-to-black edits, dramatic classical music, continuous flashbacks where a linear structure would’ve sufficed; I wonder what they were on when they made this. Nevertheless, there’s some fun cheese in it (especially whenever Dafoe appears, what a king) and you can’t deny that Irish accents and swearing make for a good combination. However, it seems unsure of whether it wants to be campy or edgy, it’s an odd mix of tones that feels equally gay and dude-bro. I really don’t know how I’m supposed to read certain scenes, because the intent of the director seems so all over the place. Not that it matters anyway, because I’d still be bored regardless. There’s no wit to any of it, and even the action is very underwhelming. Add to that a by the numbers story without any character development, and you have something that’s oddly forgettable despite all of its off the wall choices. It’s truly a bizarre film that was destined to be a cult favourite from the moment it was released, simply because the choices it makes are so wild. For a lot of people that’s enough to be entertained, but I think even most of them would tell you that it’s a piece of shit.
2/10
Still holds up and I have been watching it each St Patrick's Day for the the past few years - easily worth watching once a year. There are some cheesy/unrealistic parts but looking past that (and remembering that it is a movie after all), it is a solid film. It is impressive how much entertainment and action is fit into 2 hours - so many quotable moments, a great soundtrack, and some parts are downright hilarious.
It's basically a superhero movie about a couple of guys who spontaneously decide they want to kill all of the mob bosses and turn about to be somehow superhumanly competent while also being dumbasses.
Some moments are funny stupid, other moments are awkwardly stupid, but the stupidity never stops.
I've always confused this with Reservoir Dogs so I went in expecting a bit more.. Not bad
Only one of the best movies of all time!!! Wyatt Fu*cing Earp!!!!!!
` Porn actor Ron Jeremy as a Russian Mobster, better yet, his character gets killed while watching a porn act
I find it interesting that so many parallels are drawn between this and Pulp Fiction, because beyond the genre staples and one or two racy taboo-challenging scenes, they don't have all that much in common. The Saints don't benefit from the comparison, either, considering Fiction is an ambitious, label-defying, scene chewing mega-monster, while they're just suitably entertaining bullet spitters with an accent.
There's plenty of good action to be savored here, with a few wildly original payoffs and an upturned barrel full of blood'n'guts, but at heart it's an extremely simple vigilante justice story that's well-served by its hair trigger. The two leads, twin brothers who seem to have been waiting their entire lives for the excuse to go on this kind of a rampage, power through wave after wave of mafia underlings without even a whiff of danger until the closing moments. That makes for some giddy action sets early on, sure, but when the story is finally ready to slow down and say something, it's left without anything to lean on.
Willem DaFoe is a potential show-stealer as the morally (and sexually) confused police detective on the Saints' case, but he falls victim to the same trappings as the plot. Loaded with character, bravado and personality, it lacks depth and meaning.
Overrated. The characters are really bad. The movie is a stereotypical 90s Tarantino knock off.
Still a brilliant movie. One of my best movies.:grin:
Why why why have i only just watched The Boondock Saints! Brilliant film very rarely do you watch a film where every actor is good no no not good but brilliant!! Sean Patrick Flanery brilliant, (The Walking deads Daryl) Norman Reedus briiliant,Willem Dafoe brilliant David Della Rocco brilliant & even Billy Connelly's Cameo is brilliant! So 1 word basically sums up The Boondock Saints.....BRILLIANT!!! 10/10
I can not enjoy this movie. i remember one or two scenes, but especially from a christian perspective it's just pure dumbness.
never enjoyed this movie, and i don't know why my friends like it at all.
not "style over substance", more like "style with dumbness"
2/10
I think watching "The Boondock Saints" on St. Paddies Day is a nice tradition - whether you're Irish or not ;)
This cult movie that is clearly created on a budget is a great flick that guarantees for a good time. Sean Patrick Flanery, Norman Reedus, Willem Dafoe, Billy Connolly and David Della Rocco give us some really great acting and a pretty action-packed movie, that is only topped by it's crazy unconventional story that include a number of absurd scenes and crazy dialogs.
Some crazy shit that due to it's unfortunate backstory this movie never gained the attention it should have gotten. To me a cult classic that does not need to hide itself! If you haven't seen it, watch it. I guess if you like movies such as the ones by Tarantino you will also love this one!
Very good film watched this and part 2 great film to watch
Time for our yearly ritual of Guinness, Red Breast, and Boondock Saints.
I'm on the fence about this movie. It was twisted and violent, strange and creepy. I liked it and was disgusted by it at the same time. I guess that is it's charm.
Best action movie ever!!!
this movie is bad, so bad that hit the little movies in the nuts
This is easily one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The script, the acting, and the direction were completely awful.

Possibly one of the worst editing jobs I've ever seen - but also one of my favorite movies.
