What a beautiful film, outstanding graphics, and moving sound track.. Disney keep amazing me with their work... XD
Moana is an amazing movie. It keeps up with the well known Disney format of an independent leading character which all the children aspire to be like! It has great songs, absolutely gorgeous animation with the colours beaming out of the screen, and one of the funniest sidekicks in movie history! What could be a better formula for a movie!
Really enjoyed it. The songs were catchy, characters had good chemistry, and it was visually stunning. This is the third Disney princess movie in a row that doesn't make the female lead rely on a love interest, and a rare movie that keeps her parents alive!
The kids have already asked to go see it again.
A girl in the pacific islands embarks on a quest to save the world.
Computer animation is getting better and better and there’s no doubt that Moana is at the top of its game on this front. The islands and the ocean look lush and tactile with the bright bold colours making for a beautiful film in every frame.
Much like Frozen however, Moana is bland beneath the surface. It’s ostensibly a film about independence and self-empowerment but these elements feel like they were written by a committee over at Disney, rather than being a true expression of human emotion. It’s paint by numbers film making.
While Moana sailed across the world in search of new lands I felt like I was drowning in an ocean of noise, wacky sidekicks and bland pop songs with pan pipes laid over the top.
Could have been so much better.

Good story, though a bit predictable. Gorgeous animations
Three guesses (and the first two don't count) -- hahaha -- how I've seen this movie over two hundred and fifty times...?
What I've always found amazing is that when my grand-niece, who, yes, I was baby-sitting for over a year, couldn't have known her grand-father is Hawaiian. It was the only movie she identified with. It was the only screen time she wanted (she didn't get to watch the whole thing in a day usually).
But, yeah, that's how.
Moana is a wonderful feelgood film. It has a catchy soundtrack, a colorful world and likeabale characters. Moana and Maui make a great leading couple. The voice acting is, as always, superb and the animation is outrageously beautiful. I also like the unusual story and setting, giving this film an exotic and fresh feel.
"If my name was Sebastian and I had a cool Jamaican accent, you'd totally help me" LOOOOOOOL
The thing I liked the most was how the ocean was an entity in and of itself, but the soundtrack was weak AF. I'm disappointed, Disney. We need to go back to the likes of Hercules and Mulan. Now, those movies had some seriously kickass soundtracks.
Template Disney story of the good destroying the evil to save the world. Nevertheless, not bad. Amazing graphics by Disney as usual. That makes us forget the cliched storyline. Good but not so great. Would rate 7/10
i don't know much about the technicality of animation all i know is that i want to swim in their ocean and lay under their sky is that too much to ask ?
breathtaking art quality, but really unexploited world and characters...
Unfortunately, I watched it in french, so I don't know yet about the english version, I expect it to be better (and I hope) as the sentences and songs were poor...
Some good parts though : amazing work on graphics, light, movement... hats off to that !
They used some jokes WAY too much, but still made me laugth from time to time !
Seriously though... this chicken... PLEASE ! This was funny for the first 15 minutes, then it became exasperating to see the same joke over and over again...
In the end, the main idea was quite good, but the unfolding was sloppy
"You're wearing a dress and have a talking animal sidekick. You're a princess."
'Moana' proves that the only division of the Disney company making quality products is Walt Disney Animation Studios. Pixar is busy doing sequels, Marvel is busy making as many stale movies as possible, and Disney is busy making live-action remakes.
While very predictable and a little slow at times, Moana boasts some amazing visual work. It's the closest we're going to get to seeing a CGI Hayao Miyazaki movie. Even the manta ray sequence seemed borrowed straight out of 'Ponyo', so yes, it's a very nice looking production. The characters are all likable, and I'm super glad the annoying sidekick animals did not take center stage to the movie, unlike other trash like Frozen. They come in when necessary and only have a few moments here and there, exactly how it should be. Moana is your standard protagonist yearning for more in life, but here, it's not about just going on an adventure and leaving her people, it's wanting to leave to find a way to help her dying island. She understands and accepts her responsibilities to becoming chief of her island, but also wants to leave to help save the world. It's a nice clever play on the archetype and it works.
Maui, played by the amazing Dwayne Johnson, is the hero character who thinks everyone adores him, but realizes he may not be the savior humanity used to view him as. Throughout his journey, he has to decide to whether help save the world and risk losing the powers which make him special, or stay where he is and thinks everyone still adores him. He was a fun character.
A little slow at times and very by the numbers throughout most of it, but it's still way better than most recent animated features. Hopefully Disney continues making more original films like this instead of more remakes...
Drags a bit at times but some amazing and very emotional songs, a great message (which even - or perhaps especially - adults need to be reminded of) and the comic relief is much less annoying than in Frozen.
Has all the ingredients, doesn't make a great cake though
Wonderful animation and a brilliant original story.
Really entertaining and enjoyable for an animated movie.
7/10
happy because disney is putting on the films/cartoons more poc characters, but it was just cute for me, not really bad yet!
Well done non-princess from Disney. Additional +1 for soundtrack. :)
Between all the never ending songs there's surprisingly a small decent movie.
Sorry to be a moaner but, despite the beautiful animation, the plotting is weak and bland. Oh, and in the words of Maui himself, "if you open your mouth to sing again I'm going to throw up!" (that may be a slight misquote).
If I were to grade this movie by the quality of its visuals and animation alone, it would EASILY get a 10. However, the plot's extreme predictability, sub par musical segments (even more so for Disney standards), and too much focus on the "for the kids" elements of the movie really dragged down what could have been a superb movie into being just an enjoyable one.
World Premiere Review: 11/14/16
Frozen: Tropical Edition. But, that's not a bad thing. It's a really good movie with amazing animation, charming story and excellent songs (if you're into that). It's by no means flawless. Repetitiveness is the main issue, especially with certain physical humor which is done to death, particularly the wonky eyed chicken. I won't spoil what it does, but I found myself going "AGAIN?! COMON." Adults will find it charming and kids will think it's hilarious.
Lovely
You'd just dive into the movie.
One could (at least I did) totally relate themselves with Moana . She wants to get away from the normal life and find what lies beyond. But she is told by her parents not to (Thinking it to be dangerous). I believe that everyone is born Moana and eventually settles down for the normal (Which I don't say isn't cool, it's just isn't cool enough) Life should have something more to offer to us. Not just work your way through school, college, find a partner, have kids, grow old and die.
There should be speaking to nature, trusting our instincts, following our heart when it tells us to do something extraordinarily stupid, there will be consequences but it will give you something more precious, the experiences. The courage to face those consequences the next time when you will be diving into something different and sailing for an adventure.
Well, the movie will just help you brighten up your inner will for adventure.
Great job Team Moana!
Thanks for the Movie.
The plot twist at the finale with Te Ka actually being Te Fiti without her heart was so good! (I really didn't see that coming.) And the simbolism was so beautiful: the one who brought life became death itself after her heart was stolen, and at the finale Moana helped her become herself (life) again (like everything in life nothing is created, everything is transformed). Also, in a way, there was not really a villainess, it was just occurrences of bad circumstances that actually in the bottom had a good intention: Muai tried to stole Te Fiti's heart to give it to humans, so they would have the power to create life but we all saw what happened; and despite all the magic, it made the movie more real (imo). But of course the more important thing is: the children will love it! And it's good that the new generation will grow up with the message that, yes, girls can save the day too, and you do not have to be romantically involved with a man to be someone.
It wasn't amazing as I thought it would be. I like one thing, that she doesn't have a prince. Overall, it's an okay movie.
Such a beautiful movie, i really enjoyed it.
[7.7/10] There is a little bit of magic in Disney films of a certain stripe, where the music swells, and the counterpoint kicks in, and the protagonist hears the call to adventure, and your icy heart can’t help but melt a little as you feel the hero's same pull toward the horizon and trepidation over whether they can make it in time to the beat. Moana is filled to the brim with these moments, ones that make the most the hero's journey it sets the title character on and her combination of self-confidence, internal conflict, and uncertainty that give her layers and make her compelling.
But if, like me, you’ve been watching that same stripe of Disney movie since you were barely able to hum along to the music, then that formula, even a particularly entertaining version of it, can’t have the same impact that it once did. Moana is cheery, exciting, and fun from start to finish, but it doesn't break much new ground among its mouse-eared brethren, and while its rendition of the form is quite good, it’s not quite good enough to transcend it.
The best elements of the film are its music and its visuals. As to the former, Moana can boast the best set of Disney tunes on the big screen since the studio’s Renaissance era. The team of Opetaia Foa'i, Mark Mancina, and Lin-Manuel Miranda combine to concoct a series of consistently amusing, oft-stirring, and always head-bob-worthy songs that carry the film forward. From the moving chorus and counterpoint of “Where You Are” and “How Far I’ll Go” that are remixed and revisited throughout the film, to the clever humor and wordplay of “Shiny” which recalls the best of Disney’s character songs, the soundtrack alone is reason to cue this film up and stick with it through the end credits.
The same is true of the film’s visuals. Moana captures the Polynesian island aesthetic in a way that simultaneously manages to capture the natural beauty of the tropical setting in almost endless splendor, and expand it into the realm of the mystical and supernatural that feels like a natural extension of that aesthetic rather than a betrayal of it. The film is water-adjacent for the vast majority of its runtime, and uses the movement of the seas, the canopy of sky and stars overhead, and the colorful, kinetic obstacles the world throws at them in between, to create a picture that could survive on its visuals alone even if the music weren’t as good as it is.
That extends beyond the setting and cinematography. Moana features a pair of wordless characters who nonetheless have personality and important parts to play within the story. The film uses the living tattoos of Maui, a braggadocious demigod, as his conscience. Creating a sense of motion, magic, and the pull of duty and caring through the gestures and nudges of Maoi’s miniature ink equivalent is no small feat, and it’s done in new and creative ways each time.
By the same token, Moana makes the ocean itself a character, and not just in one of those cheesy, “the city is really a character in my novel” sort of ways. In a fashion that recalls the magic carpet from Aladdin, the ocean that surrounds Moana at all times is a legitimate presence and persona in the movie, one that can seem playful, rueful, encouraging, or majestic with the way it bobs up and splashes back. The animation team manages to make an amorphous blob of water feel like a friend, which is itself a unique achievement.
What holds Moana back is the way it comes off like a mix and match of elements from other films in the Disney canon. Moana’s self-proclaimed crazy lady of a grandmother is one of the most enjoyable parts of the film, but her comings and goings feel like combination of similar characters in Pocahontas and The Lion King, and happen at all-too-convenient times. The story beats, while nicely molded to fit the setting and this particular take, will be familiar to anyone who’s seen a good sampling of the studio’s prior films. And the character’s crestfallen lows, soaring highs, and goofy middles are well done, but feel like the latest flavor of Disney’s classic theme and variation.
That said, Moana can boast a few things in its favor that help distinguish it and make it worthwhile independent of the company it keeps. First, it dispenses with the love story. While there’s hints of flirtation and playfulness between Moana and Maui, this is a tale of Moana figuring out who she is, what she’s made of, and how best to lead her people while caught between the importance of tradition and the pull of the great unknown. That’s more than enough to sustain a story like this, and thankfully Moana doesn't try to shoehorn in a standard Disney romance where it’s not needed to weigh that down.
Second, the film is well-aware of the tropes its playing with. Maui has a quick but amusing explanation of why Moana is a standard issue princess (which he issues over her protests), a definition the film both leans into and subverts a bit, and he also pokes fun at her designation as The Chosen One. The hero’s journey that Moana embarks on isn’t all that novel, but the movie has the good sense to wink at its conventions without winking too hard at the audience, which takes a bit of the edge off.
Third, and perhaps most importantly, Moana is simply charming. Some of that charm comes off as a little empty if you think too hard about it, but through a combination of the fun banter between Moana and Maui, the cast of silly and heartwarming support characters, and the way the spirit of Polynesian traditions and culture are embraced and reflected make for an engaging film, even when it’s employing a familiar playbook.
That’s the trick of the uber-Disney film. There’s a certain formula that’s updated and refreshed for each new generation, but remains recognizable and a little less revelatory to the old guard that sweeps into the theater. But somewhere in the midst of the update, of the endearing, silly figures that populate the film, the splashy visuals that make you want to visit Motunui, and the songs that will be stuck in your head for days to come, the magic happens, and you stop caring about the fact that you’ve kinda sorta seen it all before, and just enjoy the moment.
The music is not really my cup of tea. There's a ton of repetition, too—where Disney films of old would have written a new song for each scene, Moana reuses the same three or four melodies (and not, IMO, in the good "this is a theme" way, like a good Broadway score). There's also just something about the way the vocals and the animation are put together that doesn't…quite…mesh. When the characters sing, it's like they're lip-syncing. Yes, I know it's animation, so technically they are lip-syncing all the time—but even other Disney films do it better.
Don't come in expecting to be surprised by any of the plot. This is a Disney film, you know how it's gonna go.
I should have guessed that the chicken was Alan Tudyk… Who else could do that?
The absolute best modern Disney film.
A beautiful story with dashing graphics and great music! Love this movie
Moana feels like a more traditional, musical Disney film than Zootopia did early in 2016. I don't think its a good as Zootopia but its still has a lot of the Disney magic with some great music and beautiful animation. Dwayne Johnson gives a Robin Williams in Aladdin level performance as Maui. One of the best celebrity voice over performances ever.
A proper crowd-pleasing adventure. Likeable characters, beautifully animated and a well told story only let down a little by the songs. They needed to be catchier or not there at all. But hey...I now know The Rock can sing!
Disney has done it again.....An absolute cultural delight filled with heartfelt moments and laughter from beginning to end. Literally one of my favorite movies of 2016.
The animation was beautiful. There were some scenes that just looked real. Disney is definitely giving Pixar a run for its money.
The story was okay. It's basically the old Disney formula minus the traditional villain. The movie didn't actually have a real villain which makes the movie kinda incomplete for a Disney movie.
Overall, it's a great kids film. Songs were catchy, characters were cute and the animation is just eye catching. Would definitely recommend a cinema viewing.
The anticipation was real when my friend wanted to watch this. Obviously, the art is a no-brainer: it's stunning and it's clear that so much hard work was put into the details (e.g. Moana's hair, the shifting of the tattoos, etc.). Love, love, love. I loved that each character was headstrong yet have the capacity/ability to show weakness in times of vulnerability. (I was dismayed that Pua was not in the rest of the movie, though.) The story overall was rich in the island's history and myths, allowing us to be part of the adventure with the protagonist. I thought the music was great, but not as memorable as other Disney films (or, at least to me). Overall, a great movie for all ages!
One of Disney's best animated movies. The animation is beautiful. The story is great and not too cliche. The voice acting is great, especially the Rock signing. The songs are fantastic.
Are You Gonna Tell Dad
Another Disney movie, where I failed not to fall for the hype. It's neat and beautiful, but it lacks substance. Frozen had more to offer and that one didn't excite me either. And both pale in comparison to Zootopia. Or most Pixar movies.
This movie was really good. I like the Rock in most of his movies and was skeptical about this one. But I will say I was glad I watched it and really enjoyed the movie from start to finish.
Good movie with good music and good animation. But the story does NOT surprise at all, even though it has some good moments.
Disney just doesn't disappoint, right? Amazing!
Eh, not really my cup of tea, and I can't really put my finger on what was lacking for me. Still, it's fun enough, and I'm sure the kids will love it.
By far one of the best Disney movies I've seen in a long while. This is an instant classic.
Visually was pretty good, songs were ok and prepare for a lot of them. In summary it is a really nice movie for kids and adults with peculiar story about the customs of an island Polynesia. Should it steal the Oscar from Zootopia ? i think no, Zootopia was better.
I loved this movie, the animation was outstanding! and the story was really really enjoyable
Once again Disney brought us a beautifully created and fun movie. Full of love, jokes and inspiring characters. I enjoyed it as much as I basically enjoy every Disney movie. I always like seeing how "realistic" and even more beautiful they make their newest movies, there is always improvement. It was fun to see something from a different culture. I don't think there are a lot of people who know about Hawaii and all it's myths and hero's (Not sure if Maui is a real thing over there, but would be cool if he is). Got a bit confused about the name of the movie though. The internet told me that there's a reason why "Moana" is called "Vaiana" over here, but I didn't really understand it. I like both names so I'm not complaining, but I must say, it's a wee bit confusing.
The music for Moana was great. I know Lin-Manuel Miranda was a part of the music team, and although I felt like some songs resembled some Hamilton songs, I adored it nonetheless. I really recommend this movie, to grownups as much as kids. There are a few scary-ish parts in there (some people had to leave the theater with their kids because they found it rather scary), but a part from that it is absolutely wonderful.
0.7/10
sorry but I hate it.....................................
talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique..
dethroned & snatched all other princesses, watered my crops, cleared my skin, there is a God once more
I think we can safely say that we can set "Disney Quality" as a standart
I love disney when they create projects like this. It's filled with creative and mind-blowing techniques I can't even begin to name. It's got strong characters, a strong story, a strong soundtrack, strong animations, strong messages, strong fight or fun scenes, strong humour, and just a strong everything. Made for children but watched by adults. Moana is probably in my top 3 Disney 'Princesses' simply because of relatability and realisticness. Not to say the rest aren't, but being in Moana land with the chicken, crab, grandma, powers, etc. would just be insane.
Cant go wrong with this movie! So many great moments. The kids absolutely love it!

I LOVE THIS !!! cannot stop singing these songs ahhhh what a good story, top quality film
Somehow, I had never seen Moana. It is cute and top-notch Disney princess with good music. While it is still not Frozen, I actually look forward to when my kid wants to watch this one again!
Rating: 4/5 - 85% - Would Recommend
This is a decent Disney original film. It's not my favourite by a long mile but still really enjoyable. I found the soundtrack to be ok, four tacks stood out to me the most, those were: Where You Are, How Far I'll Go, You're Welcome, and the short yet powerful track Know Who You Are. I personally wish that they wouldn't have reprised How Far I'll Go as much as they did. I get that that was the big song from this film but I feel like at least one of those reprises could have made way for a different track. Overall, this is a very enjoyable Disney title but there are better ones out there.
Moana is a heartwarming and visually stunning film that follows the journey of the eponymous Moana, a young girl who sets out on a quest to find the lost demigod Maui and return the heart of the goddess Te Fiti to its rightful owner in order to save her home island. The film is directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, who were originally planning to adapt Terry Prachett's Mort as their next project, but rights issues prevented this. Moana is a Disney classic, but it is not without its flaws. The story is intricate but familiar, and the film bears striking similarities to Disney's previous classics. Moana is a refreshing change from Disney's usual insert-Prince-here love story, and the character development is charming and genuine. The animation is stunning and the film is also very funny, with a handful of genuine belly laughs. Despite its familiar story and character types, Moana is a film for all ages that will leave viewers with ear-worm songs and a warm heart.
I will rate this movie The Rock/10
I loved the character of the rooster, the movie is very beautiful and the plot is incredible
Just another brilliant animation movie by Disney that will capture your heart whether you're a parent or a kid. Not only is it a tear jerking coming of age story about a young woman who fulfills a prophecy that everyone has given up to save her village, but it has some comical pieces as well and of course some drama from bad guys. Side note, although it is animation, the scenery and special effects are breath taking.
The musical number "You're Welcome" used to be on this playlist I had called Ultimate Cringe.
While the song makes more sense in the context of the movie, it's still up there as one of the worst musical numbers of all time imo.
really enjoyable and very fun to watch. i love the ocean so much and the culture this movie shows!
Shiny was the best song in the entire movie. No competition there.

Fun movie to watch with the kids. Love the storyline and animations are on point. Love the musical part and overall a enjoyable movie. 8/10
This is a tremendously empowering film for young women. Moana is the story of a teenage chief-to-be who braves the dangers of the open ocean in service to her people. She goes against her father's wishes, who wants her to remain safely on the island of her birth, and ventures out into the unknown guided only by her unfailing courage and her growing belief in herself.
Quite a good Disney film. Not the best but good. I really liked the soundtrack and the animation was gorgeous as always in Disney films.
Was ok for a chids animated movie, the story was intersting, sometimes was very funny and sometimes was really boring
Classical pixar/disney movie with great animations, good story und funny moments. A little bit too much singing in my opinion.
An amazing movie from start to finish. The animation is stunning, the story keeps you hooked and the songs add the final touch. 8/10
This nearly academic presentation of the Hero's Journey is breathed to life by Auli'i Cravalho's endearing performance, exceptional animation and so much heart that mine was in my throat for a lot of the film.
No idea how many times I've seen this, I really like it. The "You're Welcome" song gets used (by me) a lot in our house (usually to eye-rolls).
Must have been too much sunscreen on her hands...dropping that coin constantly! Smh. 1 or 2 decent songs.
this is so pure I can't express what I'm feeling rn
Beautiful movie in terms of graphics and has a few catchy songs. The cultural coat of paint is nice, but ultimately flakes off to show a fairly standard Disney animated experience in the end. The leads do a good job, some of the gags/jokes are funny, although the chicken mascot wares thin quickly. Loved the little homage to Mad Max. Hard to hate the film, but in a few years it'll be hard to remember, except maybe for the water effects.
Excellent film... I've even found myself singing along to the musical numbers.
GREAT movie! Moana is one cool fierce kid. Maui is so much fun. Beautifully made, good songs and a nice easy to follow story. One of the best Disney movies in my opinion where things aren't about a princess looking for love but a rebel teen looking to save her people.
Horrendous movie. One of the absolute worst animated movies I have ever seen. Everything about this is cheap and generic and frankly it reminds me a lot of "the good dinosaur" in that sense. I thought Disney really stepped up the creativity with "Frozen" but with this latest trend of complete garbage they roll out, we are again reminded that they really don't give a crap.
Moana sticks to Disney's tested way and continues their second renaissance with effective flair.
"I am allergic to apostrophes." - Peter Griffin
Loved the movie, although the songs could be better.
Wow, I love Disney, and I love this. I must have watched it 10+ times already. It looks beautiful, it's humorous and it's full of fantastic catchy songs. A must see.

I'm a big fan of Pixar films, but this new animated division of Disney, which crafted Moana, is superb. The quality of the art is clean and georgeous. The personal idiocyncristic movements that capture each character are reminiscent of the work of the great animator Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away). This animated movie is a gem, must see movie. Beyond it's technical excellence, the story is full and unique. Disney gets a new princess (OK... Chief's daughter). Children get two new songs with which to drive their parents crazy and replace Frozen (on repeat). The Asian Pacific is brought to life. Both children and adults will love this picture. I'm a fan. I give it a 10 (spectacular) out of 10.
