Matilda 1996

You don't understand how much this movie means to me. You can grow up to be anything, family is earned, and imagination and learning is power. This movie is so innocent and pure and about being your true self above all else. And it makes me happy.

Still one of my fav childhood movies

Smart and clever, but slightly disturbing to see children in peril.

This movie was one of my favorites when I was child, it makes me feel like a kid every time I watch it.

Ha ha, this is dark as hell for a kids movie.

I have watched this movie on repeat since I was a child, I am sure I pissed my mother off in doing so. I will never tire of the innocence, the purity, and the adventure of this movie. Danny DeVito is a wonderful and magical human for not only fighting for this movie, but doing such a magical job as director and narrator. Thank you for my childhood joy.

An excellent kid's film. Lots of fun. Exaggerated film work that keeps it grounded in Matilda's reality while at the same time making anything seem possible. Great characters and excellent acting.

A fun little movie. It was adorable, I loved the cheesy 90s editing and tropes, it just adds to the atmosphere. Recommended!

I knew why I did not watch this as a child and why I should not have watched it now. This is a really horrible movie which I did not find funny at all. Everything is way too exaggerated – even for kids this has to be too much!?

This movie is dark and twisted. It is about a smart girl who is neglected at home and phisically and mentally abused at school, until she develops mind powers and get her revenge against the principal, who has mental issues. Oh, and their parents also didn't think twice when asked to give her away.

This classic film based on the book by Roald Dahl is a childhood classic. Growing up in the 90s this was one of my go-to films. I loved how Matilda was a very clever child who supported learning (something I was really drawn to.) Yet there was still a taste of magic in there too.

CAUTION: I really paid attention to this movie when I watched it with my grandchildren. In my opinion & my grandchildren's, this movie is very disturbing. It was taken too far to see children abused this way.

Classic from my childhood. Never gets old, always watch it when I'm feeling sad or sick :)

Unarguably one of the best films ever made.

"You are not alone." Magic of reading & books. School as potentially awful while simultaneously fantastic, between great teachers & great friends. Danny DeVito is a national treasure.

Zany, wacky kid fodder from the mid '90s. Adapted from a Roald Dahl book with just a little dash of modernization, it's technically faithful but spiritually thin. Director (and supporting star) Danny DeVito, never particularly known for his nuance, seems dedicated to reenacting every last one of the silly, cheesy moments but whiffs on the book's heartier aspects. In his defense, that does seem to be a difficult target to hit, as many of Dahl's other works have been failed similarly. Garishly colorful, with an over-active wardrobe and ridiculous effects work, it's precisely the kind of movie you'll want to throw on for the youngsters before leaving the room.

For me this film was a mixed bag.  It was cute on many levels and my kids seemed to enjoy it.  That said... I don't get why it needed to be that dark (and I LOVE dark movies).  I was more than a little surprised at the amount of violence against and by children.  I firmly subscribe to the Carline-eque notion that if your best argument is "what about the children" you don't have much of an argument.  However, this is a movie aimed at families and kids.
I can't remember another movie where the message is that maybe you'll get magical powers to punish an adult and maybe someone will come along that will replace your awful family.
