"Luther: The Fallen Sun" is a movie that tries to explore the theme of redemption and the fight against inner demons. Although the film has some interesting moments, it ultimately falls short in terms of storytelling and character development. The pacing is uneven, and the plot lacks coherence, which can make it difficult for viewers to fully engage with the story. Additionally, the performances from the cast are decent, but not exceptional. Overall, "Luther: The Fallen Sun" is a mediocre film that fails to stand out in the crowded landscape of similar genre movies.
I wanted to love it the same way I loved the TV series. Wanted to…
Can't be bothered with far fetched nonsense like this.
Coming on March 10 Netflix
I quite enjoyed the show until the end. This, however, felt like an amateur film to me. I know it isn’t because of the actors that are involved, but almost every directorial choice in this film makes no sense to me. For starters, it’s really hard to get a grasp on its tone. One minute it feels like a heightened, theatrical comicbook film, other moments feel like they’re being lifted from the Se7en/Silence of the Lambs playbook. The dialogue, story choices, blocking and Andy Serkis’ hair are weird and illogical. Why did we need this prison section? Why does Andy Serkis’ character feel like a mashup of several Batman villains? Why am I supposed to root for a detective who escapes from prison and acts according to his own will ? This takes place in modern day London, not Gotham City, right? Was this a black list script that has been retooled to loosely fit with the show? Cuz I feel like I’ve been tricked into watching a B-movie I’d never watch if the Luther brand wasn’t attached to it. The movie is at least a little elevated by Elba’s performance and a few effective moments of tension, but even a lot of those beats are clearly lifted from other movies. For example, there’s this whole chase scene that takes place in the London underground which blatantly rips off Skyfall (a movie that’s visually “referenced” on multiple occasions). It’s just very, very weak on a creative level. It’d probably be slightly more watchable at 90 minutes, but it thinks it’s this big epic that can sustain a long runtime, which is a little misjudged to say the least.
2.5/10
If you enjoyed the TV show... DO NOT WATCH THIS.
It's crap.
There are shows and movies that you have to detach reality when watching them.. Spiderman, Batman etc. But you shouldn't have to detach reality for an entire 2-hour cop show set in London!!
There are so many bad scenes in this, there's no way a serious actor would have agreed to be in it unless it was solely for the $$$$$$$$$ offered if they had read the script prior to signing on.
I could list the bad stuff but it would take longer than watching the movie all over again. Here's one that won't ruin the plot....
Driving in the middle of nowhere - literally, there is nothing there. She folds the paper map and says "We're 3 miles out." They have to abandon the car minutes later (this scene is so impossibly stupid you have to see it to believe it). They get out and she says "We're 1 1/2 miles out." They walk for a bit, come over a crest and see their destination - about 2 miles away.
I won't even go into the absolute moronic things that happen from that point on.
Based on the final scene I think think this is going to turn into a James Bond type franchise going forward... and that's why this movie was made. I won't be watching it.
2/10
I've never seen Luther so can't comment on how good or bad this might be compared to that show. Regardless, I enjoyed this thriller, and it has inspired me to catch up on the original TV show.
I have not watched the Luther TV show which is maybe why I tolerated this better than many other reviewers. The film has flaws which I’m too lazy to list at the moment but it’s definitely entertaining, fast paced and quite dark with some cringe-worthy gore.
Very good movie. Well worth a watch :thumbsup_tone1:
[Netflix] You could expect a good story that has matured over the years since the last season, but in the end it is a conventional police psychodrama that again uses trauma to explain evil. But Luther will never be the same without his antagonist Alice Morgan, who is to Luther what Dr. No is to 007. Some casting mistakes like Cynthia Erivo and a cartoonish antagonist, no matter how hard Andy Serkis tries, are disappointing as new elements. It's too conventional and too lazy, as random and absurd as the traffic chaos at Piccadilly Circus. Luther doesn't deserve to be a cheap James Bond.
Like I like my coffee: dark and intense.
I don't remember the show being this unrelentingly grim. I can see why critics disliked it.
1/10 for being a Luther movie
8/10 for being a over the top action/thriller
This is not Luther!!!!!!!!
It’s the following
10% Luther
40% saw
20% bond
10% mission impossible
20% silence of the lambs
They have taking a Luther script and then cranked it up 1000%, don’t worry about the plot holes, we need to make this a s over the top as possible…..
Strip out all the OTT bond/mission impossible material and you have a blooming good Luther film, strip out all the Luther material and you have a thoroughly entertaining new bond/mission impossible style franchise…..
Nowhere near the show, but I'm still a sucker for even a tepid dose of ol' Luther that I'm willing to overrate this somewhat hackjob. Serkis is great, the writing let him down overall. Elba and Erivo worked well together. 6.5 for me which will upset the diehard show fans as most seem to be slotting it in around a 3.
I don't think this is up to the usual standard of Luther. That's not to say it's not a good movie, it is. I just didn't feel like you're in the world of Luther like you did when you watched the TV series.
Good movie, but the end :person_facepalming_tone1:♂:person_facepalming_tone1:♂
I felt like I was called stupid by it, come on, how hard it is.
Totally different from the tv series, rather dark in places, but I enjoyed it.
Nice movie i should watch it again
Don't understand the negative comments. I have watched the show multiple times and thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I'd watch it again. 9*
I very, very easy watch to get through…with brain disengaged…and what is Idris doing on that classical beat dueing the credits, man?! :open_mouth::dash::confounded::sob:
Really boring. The whole premise behind the "fall from grace" story lacks any tension and falls flat. All the cops are on his side but also they want him in jail? There aren't any stakes. You never get a chance to see him do any of the things they claim makes him such a terrible person. The villain is not interesting or scary.
It was more Luther. Good thing he put on the tie though.
Felt like a wannabe Batman in too many ways. The movie to me felt too wild. Some characters and the story felt as if there was no sense, just wildness.
Luther becomes James Bond in a Volvo chasing the Bond villain Andy Serkis to his hideout at the South Pole. There's even a phone signal at the South pole. Great show, terrible movie!
It started alright, and it was interesting until the last half hour. It's just too sadistic only for the sake of it. Luther always had twisted, sick villains, but this was just too much.
Why are there so many big-haired blonde psychos in movies? And speaking of, I did miss Alice.
Like I like my coffee: dark and intense.
If you’ve watched the series, this is a real waste of time. They didn’t really invest in the storyline, details etc. Just another predictable movie. That makes it feel cheap and rushed.
The movie starts off really strong but loses it pace after an hour. Still very enjoyable. Elba, Erivo and Serkis all do a great job.
I watched the movie and there are many good things and it was entertained but come on so many missing pieces in the story and no sense on many of them, i cant understand how they manage to make a "good" movie with so many bad things.
One of the worst films that I’ve watched.
This movie is going to the list of the worst movies of 2023
It's been a while since we last saw Luther. It seems like he's become more empathetic and much better with his broken instinctual powers. But, I dare say, I enjoyed this more than 007 No Time To Die. That said, this doesn't seem to have the same level of riveting storytelling as the series did and was a little rushed to get on with the plot in certain places too. One last hurrah for Luther and Schenk?
Good movie, but too many holes.
Sick movie, enjoyed it but boy o boy what a sick mind. A bit more mystery would have fitted well for the killer.
First idris alba appearance as James Bond !!! And it sucks , many plot holes and just good for casual watch
It’s a bit jumpy, it flits from scene to scene without the cleverness of Nolan’s editing. Speaking of which, the director has definitely been influenced by the Dark Knight films. There’s even a Batman scene where Luther has escaped prison and stands looking over Gotham, erm I mean London. The Dark Knight Rises. And there’s elements of Se7en. But still, an okay film.
Now I want to watch the TV series given the comments here. This felt like a TV version of Saw, with much less gore obviously.
It was entertaining enough, and the main plot was creepy AF.
I wouldn’t call it dark or gritty but it absolutely could have been. Maybe if it was detached from the TV show character it would have been better?
A disappointment, no where near the TV shows quality
Sorry but I thought it was complete rubbish - the plot was farcical and the acting very poor - not helped by the very poor script.
The absolute definition of a sell out. BBC, Cross, and Elba should all be ashamed that they sold their collective souls to Silicon Valley. 15 minutes in and you can tell someone plagiarized a James Bond script. Ruined a franchise. 2 hours of my life I wished to have back.
you can look at it very well. the beginning is really exciting. the middle part ripples away. the finale is exaggerated. Overall the series is better than this movie
It’s ok.
It’s not a patch on the original series and some of the poetic license taken, wow!
It is a good movie and I enjoyed watching it at movie theater. However, the story has some plot holes that really annoyed me in the last half hour of the movie. The first 2/3 of the movie is really amazing, acting was good, camera, music, and story, after that maybe they changed the director :joy:
Good entertainment if you ignore how far fetched it all is.

I haven't watch the series but I watched this movie anyway and I must say I really enjoyed it!
Good work!
