A Jim Carry classic. Very brilliant improv acting in this film by Jim Carry over a heartfelt plot about a father developing a better relationship with his son and having the realization to earn the trust of his ex-wife back all the while battling a curse that doesn't allow this lawyer of a character to lie which is the whole premise of the comedy portion that leads to a whole lot of hilarious skits that require a lot insane facial expressions and imrpov.
Jim Carrey is a far better actor than be directed to do all these silly facial expressions all the time. Is there anybody who really laughs with these? If you want to laugh deeply from your heart, watch authentic Italian comedies!
Back when people would pay just to watch someone contort their face and make silly noises for 90 minutes. One of my favourite comedies honestly, Jim Carrey is absolutely deranged in this, looks like he’s gonna pop a blood vessel at any moment
funny super funny liked it a lot jim carrey you made my days so many times thank you for your work, love you man, i love you
"My teacher syas reall beauty is inside, thats just something ugly people say" hha best movie quote ever!
The beginning of Jim Carrey's "I can do dramedy, trust me" phase. And despite all previous examples of why that was a such a long shot, he followed through several more times over the next seven years.
Ah Jim Carrey, how you filled up our 90s... Now it's just looks silly, we're too cynic to appreciate you anymore. This film didn't stand the test of time.
"Write it! Write it, or I'll break it off!"
Even though this is my first Jim Carrey film, I already feel like most of his performances are like this one, and while some might've worked, been more excusable, or less irritable somehow, this one has made me tired of it already. His acting style, or rather his insistence on always doing this kind of acting, is so particular (and not necessarily in a good way, most of the time, I'd imagine) that you're fatigued after only your first exposure, instead of after repeated exposure.
But as I've said, maybe it has worked in other films, like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. I don't know why I thought of that one. It didn't seem to work in this film; he was already doing his thing, acting unharmfully deranged (to a lesser extent) before "getting into it." And even then, you have to go along with it; being unable to lie doesn't justify/explain his behavior/Jim Carrey's acting style: it's too far-fetched and overly dramatic. At the same time, I'm not sure if it's more bearable even when it did work. I'm not sure what that would even entail; what would make his acting style work? If he's ever acted seriously, I bet that's much better.
Of course, all that isn't to say he's a subpar actor, quite the opposite. His go-to way of acting deserves appreciation. I doubt any of his antics are easy to do, or maybe it is for him, but you can tell he should receive praise for how well he does them. The only problem is that it wears you down efficiently, making you want to cleanse yourself by watching something else and wishing there was variation.
I thought the comedy was subpar, but that doesn't necessarily mean objectively. It could simply be a matter of not liking Jim Carrey's comedy. In this film, at least. He did add some distinction, though. I will say that, based on this film and Vampire's Kiss, both my first films of Nicolas Cage and Jim Carrey, I'd rather watch Nic do his thing. In cases where either one carries the film, Nic does it better. Watching Nic lose his mind is more enjoyable than Jim making you lose your mind.
The best part of this film was the bloopers at the end, which to no surprise, was funnier than the film. There were some moments besides the bloopers that were somewhat funny, but the bloopers were way better. And one other thing that made this film "worth it" was the hotness of Amanda Donohoe, Maura Tierney, Jennifer Tilly, and Krista Allen, who looked like Angela White. Yeah, that's 100% shallow, but it's true.
To sum it up, this film was a bit of a letdown. It was a short film, and even then, it felt too long. Jim Carrey, while a good actor, is tiring. He seemed to negatively impact this film to where short isn't short enough. But, as I said, some moments were somewhat funny, moments that weren't the bloopers, so his negative impact wasn't necessarily that negative; you just get overwhelmed and need a break.
An ok movie to have fun for one and a half hour. 6.5/10
I forgot how funny this movie is!!
Great movie he deserve 10 absolutely
Nobody does over the top physical comedy like Jim Carrey.
I didn't laugh like that for so long lol
Jim Carrey is at the height of his comedic powers in this one. I'm not sure he's done a better movie since this one. Only one that might even come close is "Bruce Almighty".
The "roast" scene around the conference room table had me laughing so hard I was crying, as did the grilling of the "personal trainer" on the stand was great too. So many funny moments.
