This movie has a fun, original concept. Freaky Friday meets Jason Voorhees. And Vince Vaughn is an excellent cast due to his willingness to act goofy despite his huge, serial killer stature (he’s like 6’5”!)
Some of the forced exposition felt pointless and drawn out, but overall it’s a great popcorn flick. And the kill scenes are creative and crazy bloody, if that’s your thing.
Don’t go in expecting a great movie — go in expecting a FUN movie.
I’m digging the Freaky Friday slasher vibe, it’s different and felt like watching Jason, Halloween happy death day and much more.. it was very entertaining packed with lots decent action along with gore and some funny acting from vince vaughn, definitely worth your time.
Oh to be a white main character that's ~not like the other girls~... just me and my token POC and gay best friends!! Having fun and crushing on the popular jock that is ~actually a super nice guy~!! <3 <3 <3
Okay okay, so this is a horror comedy, I'm not surprised how heavily they leaned into stereotypes I guess. Really, this movies was actually super cute, imo. I found myself giggling a few times, and I thought the casting was just spot-on. I've actually never seen a Vince Vaughn film, but I thought he was pretty funny. Definitely Jack Black in Jumanji kind of vibes. Can I get more of this trope? I'm starting to get addicted. I hope I see more of Celeste O'Connor and Misha Osherovich; they're a real treat. Definitely gonna look them up and see what else they're in. And I find that Kathryn Newton is always a joy to watch on screen. Maybe I'll watch Detective Pikachu again...
If you're into mindless horror comedy that's heavy on the gore and has a surface-level plot, this is for you. But I am nothing if not a fool— I really found myself invested in the LOVE INTEREST PLOTLINE. I'm a SUCKER FOR LOSERS GETTING THE JOCK. I DON'T CARE. SUE ME.
Was only was here for the supernatural girl and Vince .Great acting from both ^^ 7,5/10 pretty nice movie
I enjoyed this - Vaughan is a real hoot as both a teenage girl and a serial killer - but I felt it didn't quite live up to its potential. It was still fun, but it slows down occasionally, and weirdly becomes quite mawkish, which goes against the overall tone of the film. Still worth a watch, for both laughs and mild scares.
NOTE FOR MYSELF SO I REMEMBER SOMEDAY, ONLY REPRESENTS MY OPINION/THOUGHTS FOR MYSELF NOT A “REAL REVIEW“, SO YOU PROBABLY WONT AGREE WITH IT
(also its not my 1st language)
5.5
uff, being a spn fan I was excited for this one, (k.newton) but heard about bad reviews, and sadly I agree with them. Great original Story idea but poorly executed, characters felt somehow unnatural and stereotypical, everything’s kinda rushed and doesn’t make sense. Also almost no backstory, idk how to explain it but this movie didn’t feel real/istic , plus definitely lacks in depth. Maybe a mini series would’ve been better, so we could’ve had more backstory of the butcher(and why he barely talks, maybe I missed it but I def expected more newton scenes, and more badass dark jokes would’ve been great.)
but the acting was pretty good, especially playing opposite genders with such different personalities;both did good, not astounding but pretty good
It was amusing, the acting from the main two actors was good, but ultimately this movie was missing a lot. This movie needed some backstory to The Butcher. Given the genre of this movie, being a serial killer simply because is not good enough. I needed a reason. Sure, we saw he (she) woke up in a right slum, but what else. Also why did this supposed urban myth that nobody had any evidence of suddenly just go mad? Seemed a bit disjointed.
All that said, it was ok and watchable.
Booker trying to piece Vince Vaughn was certainly freaky
Fun and forgettable watch ppphhhfffrrrttt
to inappropriate for younger audience... too immature for adults.. Teen drama... very disappointed
I enjoyed this take on the Freaky Friday movies of old. Vince Vaugh did an outstanding job of pretending to be a young girl. When he was on the screen it was also interesting. The rest of the movie was ok. I will say that there were a few ways people got killed that was interesting and something I hadn't seen before in other movies. The wine bottle one at the start was absolutely awesome. Overall this is a good B movie that I'm glad I didn't pay $15 a ticket to go see. Definitely worth a watch from the comfort of your own home though.
the analytical part of me wanted to examine it...but I know it has no content.
Stupid idea, bad acting, boring script
Oh, yet another switch bodies movie applied to an overused teen plot. Terrible act, poor story & character development. Watched this only because of Vince Vaughn but I am very disappointed. Didn't expect too much, however, I hoped for at least a better comedy.
Not a whole lot to see here. It's Freaky Friday meets any slasher movie. There are a few laughs and a couple of quality kills but not much more than that.
How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!
:hocho: FREAKY (2020) REVIEW
:beginner: Streaming : Amazon Prime (US)
If you have a liking for slasher flicks, then freaky will definitely quench your thirst in that genre. Freaky is fast paced , humourous, with relatively good horror scenes and crazy characters which keep you glued till the end. Slasher comedies doesn't bother your brains to exercise much rather gives you the adrenaline rush if you just want to enjoy a movie as a concept. Please keep logic out of the context while watching this one and sure you will have a great experience.
The Movie is wildly entertaining with some great performances by Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton . Both understand the genre and give a fine performance.
As a teenage slasher flick it is filled with humour and horror moments for you and your family with a Tub of Popcorn to enjoy over a weekend. With a 102 min run time , you never get bored with this body swap episode. Director Christopher Landon has done a good job with the screenplay making it fast paced which elevates a fun and engaging movie experience.
:beginner: PG : Swearing + Slasher Blood Scenes + No Nudity
:white_check_mark: Overall, Freaky is a familiar but fun riff on the classic body swap concept , makes you terrified, laugh and gives you a decent enjoyable movie Experience.

Vince is super here! Funny movie. Lots of blood.
Great mix of a Slasher and a comedy. I really miss a great slasher movie so the intro got me really happy. It was a great way to introduce my teenager daughter to my favourite genre. Next stop: probably Scream ;)
It's a fun and entertaining movie with a lot of gore but disconnect your brain first or you might left wondering why the killer gets shot a bunch of times but not only lives, comes back from an ambulance half-way to the hospital and is still able to fight three women like nothing happened.
Really enjoyable movie! Love Vince Vaughn, and he's excellent in this weird role.
Not too sure if that last scene was necessary, or at least wish it blended-in better with the end of the movie. Felt like a last minute addition.
Honestly, my only grippe is that the cops were a little trigger happy (firing warning shots all over the damn place).
The Hot Chick if it was a slasher comedy film and actually good. This movie was a lot of fun and surprisingly very gory.
The last 5 minutes hold it back from greatness and felt unnecessary. Especially since Vaughn was shot more than once but comes back totally fine.
Body swap movies have been around longer than you may think. Films like Turnabout and Here Comes Mr. Jordan came out in the 40’s. However, most point to 1976’s Freaky Friday as the popularization of the plot device, particularly in comedy. This led to some horrible films like 18 Again! and Like Father Like Son, but also led to fantastic films like Big (arguably Tom Hanks greatest performance), Heaven Can Wait, All of Me (possibly Steve Martin’s greatest performance) and Being John Malkovich. It also led to 2020’s Freaky, a body switch movie that proposes what would happen if a typical teenage girl swapped bodies with a psychotic killer.
This film comes from Blumhouse (with Universal distribution) with directing and screenwriting by Christopher Landon, who also wrote and directed the Happy Death Day franchise films, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, and Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse. (FUN FACT: Christophen Landon is the son of Michael Landon, himself starting his career in horror as the star of I Was a Teeenage Werewolf.) The pedigree of the film certainly was promising going in.
The casting was absolute perfection. Vince Vaughn checks both boxes of what you want in this movie. Vaughn is best known for his comedies such as Wedding Crashers and Dodgeball. However, he is a physically imposing man standing 6’5” which is tall IRL let alone in Hollywood, a land where many of the top leading men are of diminutive stature. Also, and this is oft forgotten in his filmography, Vaughn played a psycho once before as Norman Bates in Gus Van Sant’s shot-for-shot remake of Psycho. An actor equally adept at the horror and comedy elements this format is what I call perfect casting.
Leading the predominantly young cast is Vince’s swap partner, Kathryn Newton, moving from television to movies over the past two decades though I suspect I’ve just seen the role people will remember her from best. Her performance is as important as Vaughn’s and leads us to invest in her character as it moves from her body to Vaughn, who does a great job playing her as a character and not a caricature. It is very comparable to Jack Black’s Jumanji performance a few years back. Newton’s performance seems less showy in comparison but more grounded. Newton can’t bank on people remembering past characterizations and point to them as shorthand...she needed to mark her own territory. I honestly felt when the killer was in her body, she was even more menacing.
Another great, yet smaller role, was held down by Alan Ruck, best remembered as Cameron from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. This time, he is the authority figure with a part you expect to go one way and veers off for a nice surprise prior to leaving the film’s plot.
It’s pretty obvious from the setup, comedy would be the emphasis of the film, so it is a fair question: do the horror elements work? The answer: for the most part. Because you buy into the characters, there are some real scenes of suspense that take you by surprise. There are also some very violent, gorey kills that fill the requirements of the slasher film fan as well. It attempts some poignancy as well with a frayed family situation, and this is where I feel the film does not succeed as well. It might be a case of stuffing the script with too many unnecessary elements. Sometimes, it is those details that draw you into a film, but in this case, I saw elements such as the father’s death and mother’s battle with the bottle as superfluous and unnecessary.
The film flies along at just over 100 minutes and that seems like the perfect length. I find myself hoping it doesn’t lead to a sequel as the story is told and complete just as it is. Currently, it has doubled its tiny $6 million budget at a time where making your money back at all is quite an accomplishment. The legacy of this film is yet to be written, but I think like the best horror film of the year that came out early (The Invisible Man) this will be one of those films people will point to and say, “That idea should not have worked. It’s too out there. And yet, it succeeded.”
At the beginning I thought I was gonna be in for a very cliché high school slasher, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was a good horror comedy and I recommend checking it out.
A bloody "freaky friday"!
Very entertaining, the deaths were awesome and splash like you expect them to be also with a sence of humour.
Vince as a girl was hilarious. Nothing more to say about script, action scenes and stuff like that.
A funny movie to watch with friends.
so cringey, struggled to finish watching
Christopher Landon is going to make the worst SCREAM film of all time.
How the fuck do you get the opportunity of having Vince Vaughn as a 17-year-old girl on top of the call sheet and STILL manage to make utter shite of it.
Saw that Landon was a writer on the Paranormal Activity sequels and it made me realise how underrated that franchise is - if people out there actually consider 'The Marked Ones' (PA 5, fun af film) as a low point in this fella's directing career yet praise this from him then I must be smoking something y'all won't go near.
A solid take on such a worked concept, taking the usual fluffy body swap with the usual comedic results and turning it into a glorified horror/thriller/comedy is a genius move.
Only a few mins in and you can tell what your in for, sure it has its gruesome moments without going too over the top, but just be advised if your a little squeamish.
Solid performances from the cast, Vince Vaughn was really funny when you get to see him throughout and it's nice to see him in a different role, the last one I saw of his was the Internship. Both Vince and Kathryn gave great performances for their characters.
Overall I recommend this one, the plot remains simple but it does not falter or detract in its path from being a fun watch.
I was entertained. Seeing Vince Vaughn's interpretation of a teenage girl running, makes it worth a watch.
This movie had my wife and I laughing. This is a great horror comedy movie, that everyone has to check if they are a fan of horror comedies.
3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Freaky’:
Entertaining, but incredibly predictable. I literally could’ve written the body count list before they swapped bodies.
They took a LOT from The Hot Chick. From the general plot line (minus the horror elements) right down to the secret handshake for convincing her friends.
Vince Vaughn had a few solid moments of humor here. In between some of the corny one-liners and questionable acting from some of the other actors, it was nice to see that he still has it.
Freaky is a self-aware horror comedy spin on the classic film Freaky Friday (hence the name freaky). The slasher elements are extremely present, and I loved the shades of Friday the 13th with the Jason style killer and the sharp music, reminiscent of the original F13 score, playing during his scenes. The kills are incredibly brutal and really earn the R rating, some are very creative while others are the run of the mill horror kills. While watching this movie I could not help but feel bored at times. There were some definite lulls that could have been sharpened up for a tighter movie viewing experience.
I understand that the movie was self-aware and poked fun at a lot of horror tropes, bult I felt as if they went a little too overboard. There were some scenes of bullying that just felt so unbelievable and over the top that it really pulled me out of the film even though I understood it was being satirical. The acting overall was pretty good, some lines were delivered awkwardly but nothing that was too consistent to harm the experience. Vince Vaughn is fantastic in this movie, and when that switch happens, he really sells that he is a high school girl in a killer's body with his girly movements and dialect.
Overall, I had a fun time with the movie, but there were quite a few elements that really hold it back.
Verdict: Decent
What a very creative and well executed horror/comedy. The initial first scene being a true slasher scene was a great opening then the addition of mystical magic and comedy into the film as their is dark magic connected to the murder weapon makes it for an intriguing film. When the killer and main character switch bodies the acting of both actors is very very good in terms of adapting each other’s personalities. The movie keeps you on the edge of your seat scared and laughing whole time. But it also has a very heartfelt lining to it as you watch the relationship between mother and daughter.
Not the best horror comedy but it has some good lines. My only major complaint was that Vince played the girl much more stereotypically "girly" than she was acting before they switched bodies and it felt inconsistent.
Kathryn Newton deserved better.
'Freaky' is largely a (very) mixed bag, but Newton's performance is honestly superb - which makes it difficult to rate. On the one hand you have a fairly run-of-the-mill slasher, yet on the other Newton's showing is of such quality that it belongs in something far greater. She's top notch here, it's just severely unfortunate the film is nowhere near her level at all.
There are a few decent slasher-y moments and Vince Vaughn tries. Speaking of Vaughn, it's neat to see a different side to him as an actor but I found him to be 50/50 in this; he kills it (pardon the pun) in some parts, but in others it's clear he's trying to impersonate a teenage girl - which is the complete opposite to Newton, who plays two characters supremely well.
I know I'm repeating myself, but... in layman's terms: Newton good, film bad.
Enjoyable twist to a used idea. A body switch isn't new but this might be my favorite of the bunch. The horror comedy genre is one of my favorites nowadays. Vince Vaughn was fun and I applauded the side characters bravery. There was some over the top gore that I personally could've done without but as it is still a 'horror' movie I know it fits. I would simply call this movie 'fun'.
Vince Vaughn stars in the horror-comedy Freaky, a new take on the cult classic Freaky Friday. When Millie Kessler is attacked by a serial killer with a mystical dagger they switch bodies, leaving her on the run from the police and her family and friends in danger. Vaugh gives a good performance, and is able to switch between the killer and teenage girl personas fairly well. His co-star, Kathryn Newton, however, is a little weak, but gets by. Additionally, the satire is pretty clever in how it plays with horror movie tropes, yet it really doesn’t go far enough with the over-the-top kills that are needed for a comedy of this type. Freaky has its problems, but it also delivers some fun laughs too.
a delightful slasher flick that calls for some major suspension of disbelief but like, it's a freaky friday plot, you've got a lot to suspend to begin with. vince vaughn is such an underrated actor. HIM DOING THE SCENE WITH MILLIE AND BOOKER IN THE BACKSEAT, COMEDIC GOLD AND YET STILL TENDER
Pretty weak, but funny. The funniest scene was where the gay character had to think quickly to explain a compromising situation to his mother...
I hadn't seen anything with Vaughn since True Detective ("Blue balls, but in my heart." will live with me for years) but he nailed the physical comedy here, right down to running like a girl.
I'm really not a fan of this tired Hollywood trope of an objectively stunningly beautiful character (of any gender) suddenly being perceived as beautiful after a costume change. It's just nonsense.
Freaky felt way too much like a quick cash grab. Although the acting is great and the concept is fantastic, it falls short in every other aspect. It felt hollow, predictable, and overall rather boring.
Worth watching if there's nothing else on, but don't get your hopes up.
Wow, liked this a lot more when re-watching it in the cinema. Not as good as Happy Death Day but not unfun.
Weird ,freaky,dark, and funny.
Strange movie. Well acted by Vince.
It's not a masterpiece, and maybe took a bit too long to get to the exciting part of the story, but still an easily entertaining slasher comedy flick. It managed to give me many good laughs, super fun to watch! Also no need to say, but Vince Vaughn was fantastic!
I enjoyed it. It was fun.
pathetic tbh plot is cute but damn so boring i had to skip most of it to avoid the empty talk n the criiinge oh god xD don't waste ur time
The team that brought us the horror remake of Groundhog Day now brings us the horror remake of Freaky Friday. Skip this one and wait for the horror remake of The Princess Diaries instead.
A couple of interesting kills at the beginning does little to prevent this cliché from slipping into a morass of bad comedy, predictable situations and enough WTFs to make you beg for forgiveness.
Shame, as Vince Vaughn and -- well, just Vince Vaughn, in fact --turned in a decent performance.
Contemporary Twitter slasher that does little more than smash together it's two main inspirations with a modern message twist. Still, entertaining and gory with a few solid quips, and a good "Jack Black in Jumanji" performance from Vaughn.
I think it is fun to watch. Vince Vaughn is very funny while he pretends like he is a girl.
Such a good, entertaining movie. I love it, definitely a must watch!
Vince Vaughn was fuckin awesome! Loved the movie but i think a little too much gore-y for a comedy.
Well blumhouse again mmmppff. Still one of their better movies.
For a slasher film, there wasn't enough slashing. Vaughn's humor is what pushed from from a 6 rating to a 7
This was a little scary and ultimately funny. Not something we see often. There should be more films like this!

One of the funnier movies of the year
Pretty joyful and entertaining , mostly because of Vince Vaughn , his scenes were hilarious
A bloody good time
