I'm not sure how I feel about The Big Lebowski. A complaint I have with the Coen brothers' movies is that they often seem to sort of meander, their plots are just a series of events which don't really have much consequence. Why should I care what happens to anybody in their films? I guess this was more of an issue with Inside Llewyn Davis, at least something actually happened in The Big Lebowski. Some of the dialogue and performances, especially by Goodman, are pretty great though.
The Dude is that kind of guy that you'd love to be in your family as an uncle or something but you'll hate to be him ahaha love this movie
yeah? well, you know, thats just like uh, your opinion, man.
Absolut rubbish about nothing. I really do not understand how this movie can be so rated as well as Pulp Fiction, which is the same rubbish.
Yikes. I do not understand the hype over this movie. It’s simply not funny and borders on annoying. Extra points for (typically) a great cast. This definitely missed the mark for me.
Though it's a movie without much of a "plot", the Dude is a legend and the Cohen brothers are wizards who will never steer you wrong.
Every time I watch this film my face hurts. I sit there with a stupid wide grin laughing at the crazy, no...insane characters that make this story great. The way that the film is book ended by the narration of "The Stranger" (Sam Elliot) and the way he drops in to visit "The Dude" (Jeff Bridges) is a blast. And speaking of The Dude, I can't think of a role I like Bridges in more. A slacker who ends up caring about more than his soiled rug, and finds he is the only sane person in a world filled with misfits.
In the middle of all of the craziness, there are moments that are genuinely emotional as well. But thankfully those don't take too long before the hilarity returns. I'd say this is a comedy, but it's not a stupid Jack Black or Seth Rogen style farce. It's a little stoned, a little dark and even a little shocking at times.
Although I haven't seen all of the Coen Brothers films, so far, this one ranks as my personal favorite.
Really funny and iconic. Totally recommended.
Watching this all I wanted to do was to shoot those three stupid losers in the face. Damn, what a horrible movie. I can't understand what the fucking hype is about.
So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing
abdolute cult, you must know the dude
All time high!
This movie belongs in every collection. Next to Pulp Fiction, Snatch and Cold Blooded.
White Russian, Baby!
"that's right man, don't F with the Jesus" Thats my favorite part. John Turturro in that purple jump suit with the coke nail was the best
A very funny movie with great characters, acting and dialogue that perfectly combines highbrow comedy with a lowbrow, silly plot.
It does get a bit messy near the end, and in terms of like deeper meaning, I suppose it was trying to update the flowerpower ideology for the 90s?
Be mellow, chill out, too much dedication to any cause (religion, art, achievement) isn’t the way, because life is kind of a farce in the end.
Excellent filmmaking as well; camerawork, editing and music selection are absolutely fantastic.
It truly is the role Jeff Bridges was born to play, a rare case of actor and character melting together so perfectly that you can’t imagine anyone else in that role.
8/10
"That rug really tied the room together."
I totally agree with the Dude here. The rug did tie the room together. Why did the Asian-American had pee on it? There were so many other ways to get what he wanted.
Anyway this was my second watch ever of the Dude's film and I enjoyed it even more now. The characters is just what makes this movie work. I love everyone in it. Especially the guy with the mustache behind John Turturro. That guy also had the biggest balls on set. If you show off your mustache in the same movie that also has Sam Elliot in it, you have balls. No one will ever match Sam Elliot's glorious mustache!
Anyway The Coen Brothers made a unique film that has the quality to improve on every viewing. The cast, the soundtrack, so many memorable lines, the story it all clicks.
A great way to spend a part of a free saturday!
Just a truly goofy movie with an interestingly stupidly plot. Not for me but this is a good film for the comedy fans. The acting is quality and there are all kinds of types of comedy from violence to stupidity to cleverness. The plot being about someone who gets mistakenly mixed up in scandal makes for some intriguing comedy routines.
better than inherent vice, but i dunno got bored by the end, but trippy parts were funny
High on my list of desert island movies, Lebowski is an endlessly rewarding modern classic that seems to yield something fresh with every screening. Jeff Bridges, John Goodman and Steve Buscemi may have been able to carry this thing by themselves, staggered around a rickety old bowling lane with just a wardrobe and a copy of the Coen brothers' script, but when their performances are matched by a blindingly colorful supporting cast, a plot that swerves around like a drunken driver and the brothers' unmistakable eye for subtlety, the end result is pure magic. I could watch this three times a year and never get tired of it.
Love it. I can't help laughing a little when some people are writing about a movie and automatically praising or criticizing a director or performer for just having their name attached to it. Who cares what names worked on it. No credits should be earned automatically.
This movie is about The Dude on a quest! No endless long storyline, simple event in the beginning followed by events that take you from one entertaining event to another. Outstanding performances by Bridges and Goodman. That earns a movie credits by my standards.
20 years later this one is still standing very strong.
It's a movie for adults. I you are easily offended by swearing, jokes about some groups, religions or topics about who knows what, this might not be for you. (Highly likely not for you)
I can't help laughing like a idiot throughout ¾ of the film. Jokes through conversation, facial expressions, events, it's all here. A wide variety of characters which makes about every movie just weird works in this one.
I'm trying to think a movie to compare this one with but I can't come up with one. It's really an unique movie.
I did not really like it. Or really did not like it, haha.
After 10 minutes of watching are hearing the word fuck/ing about 50 times, I wanted to just quit watching, but I held on until the end.
Some lines were really funny though, but the movie in general.. nah, not for me.
// EDIT (four years later): Full disclosure, I only finished this because it was an assignment for my Film Studies class. So I couldn't bear to drop it. I cared for that class. I lived and breathed for that class. But well, I would've dropped if given another option.
"That rug really tied the room together."
I got the chance to see my all time favorite movie on the big screen and that is the way to see it. It was a crowded theater full of people (one was even dressed like Maude in Gutterballs) who love the movie and knew all the jokes that were coming but still laughed hard at them. Out of the countless times I've seen this, this was my favorite time. Infinitely quotable and never dull... the Dude abides.
"Am I wrong?"
You can watch it a million times, and yet, it will never get old.
By far one of the greatest movies of all time.
"This aggression will not stand man"
"That rug really tied the room together"
"Shut the fuck up Donny"
One of the least engaging movies I've ever seen. Really boring and not brilliant at all. The characters are stereotyped and stupid. Dude is trivial and insubstantial.
“The rug really tied the room together.”
- The Dude
Love, Love, Love, Love, Love, Love, Love, Love, Love, Love, Love, Love, Love, Love this movie.
:briefcase::tumbler_glass::bowling:
This is up there as the best of the Coen's work. It's endlessly entertaining. No matter how many times I watch it. The lines can be quoted for pretty much any scenario. It's just a great caper movie. The dude abides.
It's a lovin' bowlin' kidnappin' must have seen all time classic movie. The Dude Defines! But don't pee on his rug, man.. just don't do it!
Definitely one of my favourite flicks!
I have to decide yet if I will became Lebowski or a Zen Munich, although likely they is the same
Big fan of The Dude probably my favorite comedy after watching it for the first time 8/10
It's good...
It's very good...
I love ....
For a mat...
Walter.....
the scene at the beginning where they put his head in the toilet....
I loved the narrator (or at least his version in Spanish but I don't doubt that in English he must be incredible).
the sequences like the 1st time he meets Maude Lebowski, in the harnesses painting, and the talk about the pussy and the johnson lol...
walter talking about vietnam and how he shouts, makes gestures, in general the whole character, seemed unique to me....
I'm not an expert but I liked the way the movie is shot and edited, the music and the setting in general I liked it, the bowling I think it was a key element of the character...
The moments where the dude was beaten up I liked...
I found the problematic at times confusing, but still the plot grabbed me...
The characters and how Walter silenced don, the bunny in her 1st scene and how brandt takes him dude, so he doesn't fxck her....
The scene of "The Dude" in the choreography of the bowling alley, the way those scenes were shot, I liked it even though I don't like musicals or similar, but this one had something, it may sound pretentious but I really thought it was good...
The movie at times seems absurd, but that idea went away for me because of how things happen...
The scene where Walter destroys the car, and little Larry sees it from the window lol...
Jackie Treehorn the house....
10/10
By all....
The Dude.....
The big Lebowski (1998)
The dude: The dude abides
It seems people born around or after 2000 can't really fully appreciate "The Dude". That's a shame, really. But it's true. Low ratings are from people around 20, I guess it's because you weren't around or too young back then to see those kind of movies on the big screen, realizing how different and exciting they were.
'The Big Lebowski' is entertaining.
Jeff Bridges and John Goodman are a fun duo, I even would've enjoyed this 1998 flick more if it was just those two for the whole near 2 hours. Everyone else on the cast is good too, amusing seeing Peter Stormare in a role like this - as opposed to one like John Abruzzi. Speaking of 'Prison Break', Jonathan Krantz is also in this!
The film starts like a house on the fire, I did find the rest of it - particularly the middle portion - a little (emphasis on 'little') less as the story is stretched out a tad, though all in all it gave me a good time and I'd happily rewatch it no doubt.
Really great film, can’t believe I’ve never watched this! Jeff Bridges is such a great actor and very believable. Sam Elliot’s narration and cameo were just right too!!
It's not a great movie and in my opinion overhyped, but it is different and that is something, it is different than any movie I ever saw and that is really rare
It was ok I guess. I was expecting a lot more though due to the hype.
In my opinion, it’s pretty fun and it has some memorable lines and scenes, but I don’t get why so many people adore it. It’s not that good, right? Could be just me though.
With "The Big Lebowski", I finally caught up with one of the few films by the Coen brothers that I hadn't seen yet. And I have to say that the quirky characters work very well here. Given how everyone around him acts, it's telling that the Dude is almost a classic straight man by the end. Once again, the Coens had numerous great visual ideas, and the soundtrack is not bad either.
In terms of the story, I would say that it is told competently enough that you can follow it without getting bored. However, it may go in circles too often, particularly with the bowling center, which may be visited once or twice too frequently. However, the impressive cast and the humor that works throughout allow you to overlook some of the flaws.
Ultimately, though, the film left me a bit underwhelmed compared to other Coen classics. Especially when I think of "Fargo", "The Big Lebowski" can't even remotely keep up, in my opinion. Nevertheless, the film has earned its cult status. The unique characters, which influenced a slew of other works, alone ensure this.
Such an awesome film. Great cast, John Goodman’s Walter is a really standout character for me. The dialogue is hilarious and very quotable. This is a film that’s easy to rewatch again and again.
A fantastic movie that everyone should experience from start to finish. The Dude Abides.
A unique, weird, funny and thoroughly entertaining film, with a well-crafted plot and engaging screenplay.
it was really bad, I tried really hard to finish the movie. Only couple funny scenes and really disturbing.
"The Big Lebowski" is not the funniest surreal comedy, but is at least the weirdest film noir I have ever seen. It has all elements of a "The Big Sleep" kind of investigation, but with the most bizarre characters and a grotesque sarcasm typical of late postmodern cinema. The humor comes from the absurd situations and especially the quirky dialogues, but, as with most black comedies, it's more of a chuckling quietly to yourself rather than laughing out loud experience. As a whole, the film felt a bit too episodical if not even pointless at times: the Coen Brother pointed out that the plot is not the focus, but they could have done at least a little better in that sense. Once the case gets abruptly resolved, there is really nothing that ties all the scenes together, however memorable each individual moment might have been. It's an inimitably stylish, fun, and imaginative film worth its cult status, but no matter how many times I watch it, it's not as hilarious and groundbreaking as all "dudeists" keep saying.
I don't believe I'll ever truly understand the hype behind the Coen brothers movies, however this movie was the most enjoyable I've seen from them, though slightly overrated.
It is a groteque comedy, with super weird and random stuff happening and also suddenly. It comes with a pretty strong language, and the opening is somewhat gross IMHO. The plot has quite some interesting and many twists, and I thínk without a doubt the movie features very many unique moments - and characters. They feel very original and barely replacable.
Rating: 8*/10 - * You need to be able to hold out some rough stuff, and it is groteque in many situations.
Similiar to: Adam's Apples, In Bruges
The story unfolded with minimal level of the incredible wit in coen brother's works. Not saying it's a bad movie, it's just not as great as people have talked about it. Oh, But that Trippin' sequence? best of it's time absolutely.
I enjoyed the movie although I don't necessarily get the hype about it. I think what's special is the characters and the social comments that are delivered through them. Then the acting is terrific and Goodman is as much a star in this as Bridges. The comedy is nowhere near great in my opinion but there are indeed some very memorable and "memable" quotes. I also got a new favorite song out of this.
Aaron finds this hilarious and thinks the Cohen brothers show "phenomenal imagination" and that it's filmed with classic homages to other films, and it's apparently based on a real Seattle Seven dude, Jeff Dowd, but I found the two guys stupidity to be too irritating for words. How much swearing and "mans" and " dudes" can I take before wanting my 2 hours back?
i didn't really like it , it had just fee funny scence and the story was boring , how this movie received this kinna great rates? why ?
performance 10/8
Commedy 10/3
Script 10/5
directing 10/7
The best comedy movie ever. It’s hilarious the funniest movie ever made. The acting is great. It feels really rewatch able. The writing is great and it is very well directed by the Coen Brothers. Overall it’s the best comedy movie, most rewatch able movie, and funniest movie out there it’s a classic.
(9 out of 10)
"That rug really tied the room together, did it not?" The Big Lebowski stands as one of the best Coen brothers' films, and quickly became a beloved cult classic. It's a clever take on the film noir genre, and is full of dark humor and interesting characters that feel authentic in a strange way. Leading this spectacular ensemble cast of immensely entertaining and eccentric characters are Jeff Bridges and John Goodman; both of whom give outstanding performances. The story is a wild adventure that's all about the journey. The Big Lebowski is a phenomenal film that just gets better and better every time you watch it. The Dude abides.
They were some funny moments but overall I just did not get why people love this movie. Yes Jeff Bridges was perfect for this role and is a very good actor.
I realy didn't get the point of the movie and sure parts of it was funny but what's hype for?
it's kind of movie that divides movie lovers into two sides, lovers and haters and you never know which side do you belong until you watch it, it depends on your comedy taste
Popcorn time. Do not induce whiskey or drugs during the showing of this delightful piece of art, bitte.
you just know how to put the right songs to the right scene.then, you just did it
Very strange, disturbing and not funny at all.
smokey, this is bowling, not nam. there are rules.
The Dude. Epic win before that was even a thing.
Classic movie. You need to watch this
Shut the fuck up, Chanco.

The German nihilists, the feminist artist, the porn manager, the crazy phedophile, the crippled fake business tycoon, the Vietnam-war obsessed psycho and off course the Dude: a lazy deadbeat lowlife. The Big Lebowski sure has a lot of colourful personages which in my opinion is one of the reasons this movie is one of the best i have ever seen.
This is one of the many masterpieces from the Coen brothers, i wish i could congratulate them myself because they are geniuses. The music, the script and the cast are beyond fantastic. This is a masterpiece that only comes along in movies a few times in a decade. This is one of those movies that is and always will be a cult classic. I cannot say that this is the best movie that the Coen brothers ever made, but only because they made so many exceptional movies. But its definitely high up the list.
My favorite part is Gutterballs, when the Dude has some kind of hallucination. The music was just perfect together with the show Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore put on. I can't tell you how often i saw that part, that was just awesome.
Anyone should see this movie at least once in his lifetime. But once you've seen it i can guarantee you that you want to see it again.
